Mayor Michael B. Coleman wants Gov. John Kasich to veto a state law that would allow concealed-carry permit holders to store their guns in their vehicles at the Statehouse and renew their permits without a test.

Coleman, citing the massacre of 27 children and adults in Newtown, Conn. on Friday, sent Kasich a letter today that says now is the time to strengthen gun regulations in Ohio, not loosen them.

He also called on the governor to support requiring background checks for private gun sales at gun shows, limiting magazine capacity to ten rounds and passing an assault weapons ban like the one Kasich supported in congress in 1994.

?I understand the issue of gun control is a divisive one,? Coleman wrote. ?However, as the mayor of the largest city in Ohio, I have seen firsthand the damage caused by guns ? whether in the hands of criminals, the mentally ill or simply people making bad decisions.?

Coleman had a 15 minute phone conversation with Kasich yesterday about this issue and the two exchanged their viewpoints with no resolution, Coleman?s spokesman Dan Williamson said.

Kasich?s office had no comment on ?private conversations the governor has with people.?

Kasich signaled yesterday that he would not veto HB 495, which would allow guns in the Statehouse parking garage. Members of Ohio?s Republican congressional delegation also brushed aside calls to tighten gun regulations by some Democrats.

?I?m a Second Amendment supporter, and that?s not going to change,? Kasich said in a statement released yesterday.

The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School has pushed the gun control debate to the forefront across the nation after President Obama said this week he will push for tougher gun laws.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said yesterday that new gun-control legislation is part of a ?complex solution? to prevent further mass shootings in schools.
