Ancient records shed light on Italian earthquakes (Aquila area)

ScienceDaily (Aug. 3, 2012) ? When a damaging earthquake struck the area of L'Aquila in central Italy in 2009, it was the latest in the region's long history of strong and persistent quakes. The rich recorded history of settlement in the area, along with oral traditions, archaeological excavations, inscriptions and medieval texts, and offer insight into how often the region might expect destructive earthquakes.

But according to a new study by Emanuela Guidoboni and colleagues, the historical record on ancient and medieval earthquakes comes with its own shortcomings that must be addressed before the seismic history of L'Aquila can be useful in assessing the current seismic hazard in this area.

To illustrate some of these potential gaps in knowledge, the researchers combed through written records and information from archaeological excavations, covering the period from ancient Roman occupation in the first century A.D. to the late Middle Ages of the 15th century A.D. The authors say, researchers must piece together information ranging from collapsed roofs within an ancient Roman city, to the evidences of rebuilding damaged baths and cisterns. In later years, better written records offer more detail on the specific location and size of earthquakes occurring in 1349, 1456, and 1461 (a long seismic sequence).

The authors say that the early to middle Middle Ages, in particular, have a dearth of information that needs to be addressed to have a more complete picture of the region's seismic history. Overall, the records confirm that the region appears to have been host to a high number of strong earthquakes. The authors also point out a tendency in the area to produce multiple and nearly simultaneous seismic events that vary considerably in their impact.

As Guidoboni and her colleagues note, the earthquakes have had a strong influence in the region's economy and culture. It is a impact that can be seen clearly in the historical records, such as a written account of a large earthquake in 1315. During that quake, warring factions in the town came together after they "were struck with fear at the strong shaking when a frightening earthquake soon afterwards struck that place in a terrible way," the official account says, "and they abandoned their wrongdoing and returned to the narrow path of their conscience."

Toyota raises sales plan as quarterly profit zooms

TOKYO (AP) ? Toyota raised its sales target for this year to 9.76 million vehicles and reported a strong recovery in quarterly profit Friday, underlining its bounce back from a disaster plagued 2011.

Toyota Motor Corp. said April-June profit zoomed to 290.3 billion yen ($3.7 billion) from 1.1 billion yen the year before. Its new sales target would represent a 23 percent increase from the 7.95 million vehicles sold in 2011, and is 180,000 vehicles more than what Toyota Motor Corp. gave in February.

The car maker's quarterly sales soared nearly 60 percent to 5.5 trillion yen ($70.5 billion), rebounding from a sales crash that all Japanese automakers suffered after the earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan in March last year.

Toyota said quarterly vehicle sales nearly doubled from the year before to 2.3 million vehicles as sales rose in regions including North America, Europe, Japan and the rest of Asia. The regaining of U.S. market share is crucial for Toyota as that is where it makes the bulk of its profits.

Toyota, which makes the Camry sedan, Lexus luxury model and Prius hybrid, has had hard times in the past several years, including recalls of more than 14 million vehicles that began three years ago and came amid faltering global demand from the financial crisis.

The March 11 disasters in Japan, followed by the floods in Thailand, added to Toyota's hardships.

But Toyota has been recovering. For the first half of this year, it regained its spot as the world's top automaker in global vehicle sales, beating U.S. rival General Motors Co., although Toyota officials have played down the importance of being No. 1.

Toyota said it carried out cost cuts totaling 70 billion yen ($897 million) for the quarter, offsetting the negative effect of a strong yen, which erased 40 billion yen ($513 million) from operating income. A strong currency hurts Japanese exporters such as Toyota by eroding the value of overseas earnings.

Badminton's rock star: Lin Dan headlines London

LONDON (AP) ? The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Spice Girls, Beyonce ... and Lin Dan. Wembley Arena has rocked out to them all.

Lin, the closest thing badminton has to a rock star, turned the famed arena into his own mosh pit when the Chinese standout won one of the greatest finals in world championships history last year.

The thriller ended when he fought off two match points to deny Malaysian archrival Lee Chong Wei. Lin didn't let the drama end there: He ripped off his shirt with a guttural yell, embraced his coaches, pumped the air with two left hooks and saluted the still-applauding crowd.

Nearly a year later, he's headlining the arena again for the Olympics in hope of becoming the first man to retain the singles title.

He moved into the last 16 on Monday but he's still downplaying his chances for gold, especially for his 16 million followers on social media. But does the most decorated badminton player ever think about winning the London Games?

"Sometimes before I sleep at night, I would think about winning my second Olympic gold medal," he said. "However, I realized it was more important to remain focused on achieving my goal and not get carried away thinking too far ahead."

There was a time when impatience was his weakness. But training and maturity turned him into a winner of the Olympics, worlds, All England Open, Asian Games, and Thomas Cup ? each marked by a star tattooed on his left arm. When Lin won the Super Series Final last December, he became the first to complete what has been called the Super Grand Slam ? the winner of every major title available to an Asian, including the Sudirman Cup, World Cup and Asian championships. All by the age of 28.

His reputation's not entirely super, however. Lin has blemished his legacy through forfeits and retirements to help teammates: Seven times alone since late 2010. He's been accused of helping Chen Jin qualify for the last two Olympics by throwing the 2008 All England final and this year's Asian championships semifinal.

In fact, he's a bit of a bad boy: At the 2008 Korean Open final, Lin exchanged harsh words with South Korea's Chinese coach Li Mao after a disputed line call, threatening him and raising his racket. Then after losing, Lin scuffled with winner Lee Hyun-il. Three months later, Lin reportedly punched coach Ji Xinpeng in a pre-Olympic training camp.

Lin showed his class in the Beijing Games when he withstood the crush of expectations from home fans by crushing Chong Wei in the gold-medal final. Away from home, he expects to enjoy these London Games more.

"We have huge pressure when we play at home," he said. "All the people hope we can win every match and become champions. 'Champions, champions' is what we hear from them, or thinking about all the time. So the pressure gets bigger and bigger for us. In contrast, when we play abroad, play in a venue far from home, we feel relaxed. All we need to do is focus on the match itself."

Lin has had focus almost since he was born in southeast Fujian Province. The left-hander, who defied his parents' wish that he play piano, started badminton at the age of five. He was accepted into full-time badminton training at nine, and was picked for the national team at 18.

From the start he exhibited a quick-strike boldness, tactical nous and extraordinary footwork. Within three years of his senior international debut, he was ranked No. 1 in the world, in time for the Athens Olympics. He bombed in the first round but wasn't down for long. He became so successful, and one of China's highest-earning sportsmen, he had to register his name as a trademark in 2007 to stop it from being used by manufacturers without permission.

Since the Beijing Games, he's married Xie Xingfang, the retired two-time world champion and Beijing Olympic silver medalist, and concentrated more on titles than being No. 1. Hailed as the greatest badminton player, at least of this generation, he has stayed out of the spotlight in London. He looked relaxed though when he bumped into his friend Chong Wei outside their Wembley hotel and posed for pictures and compared expensive watches.

Their rematch in the final is the dream of fans. And one more chance to rock Wembley Arena.
