MESSENGER Probe Finds Strong Evidence of Ice On Mercury

It would be expensive, because of the high delta-V required to match Mercury's orbit around the sun, but we should really get a lander down there.

One that can take core samples, and that has a sophisticated chemistry lab.

Or perhaps several landers / core samplers, with the ability to send samples to a central lab module.

The ice, and the carbon material covering it, would contain a history of comet impacts, captured dust samples, and other events.

The Relationship Guide: Study Shows That Women Benefit From ...

Researchers at Cornell University conducted a unique study on 600 married and cohabiting couples asking them how happy they were together. They were also asked how committed they were to the relationship, how emotionally involved they were, how well they communicated, how frequently did they argue, how long they had waited before becoming intimate, and what?s their level of romance satisfaction.

Nearly a third of the men and women said they became romantic within the first month of dating, while 28% waited at least six months, according to the Journal of Marriage and Family.?Analysis of the data clearly showed that women who waited to become intimate were happier. And those who waited at least six months scored more highly in every category measured than those who got intimate within the first month. Even better, those who waited indicated that their intimacy was better.

The researchers said couples may benefit from taking things slowly.??A strong s*xual desire may thwart the development of other key ingredients of a healthy relationship such as commitment, mutual understanding or shared values,? the report said. ?Good s*x is sometimes confused with love; some couples overlook problematic aspects of their relationship that ultimately matter more in the long run.?

The researchers said delaying s*x gave couples time to get to know each other and work out just how compatible they were. The study?s authors said: ?Precocious pre-marital s*xual activities may have lasting effects on relationship quality.?Courtship is a time for exploration and decision-making about the relationship, when partners assess compatibility, make commitments and build on emotional and physical intimacy.?The rapid entry into s*xual relationships may, however, cut short this process, setting the stage for ?sliding? rather than ?deciding? to enter cohabiting unions.??Money worries and other factors that could have skewed the results of the study were taken into account.

While I comprehend the results of the study, I don?t believe the study will have much meaning if women aren?t on the same page. There are a slew of women who?d be ecstatic to be intimate with ?no strings attached?. As long as those women are in existence, it may become a challenge for women who abstain from intimacy before marriage or for more than a few weeks to keep their significant other?s undivided attention. This is especially true if the couple has been intimate in the past.

Ladies, the best thing to do is be upfront and honest with guys you?re dating. Let them know ahead of time that you are abstaining from intimacy before marriage so that they can make a decision as to whether or not they are willing to make that sacrifice. Men, if you date a woman who has informed you in advance that she is not going to be intimate with you prior to marriage or for quite some time, it is up to you to decide whether or not you?re prepared (mentally) to abstain with her or if you would prefer to keep looking for someone who is willing to be intimate within a shorter timeframe.

It is beneficial for each person to be honest with the person they?re dating. If one person in the relationship lies or withholds information from the other, the relationship will inevitably be ruined and more than likely irreconcilable.

Gilda's Club name change insult to late comedian?

MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) ? Remember Roseanne Roseannadana? Or Emily Litella? Or Baba Wawa?

Younger generations might not recognize the characters popularized by comedian Gilda Radner. Nor might they remember Radner herself, an original cast member of "Saturday Night Live" who died 23 years ago and for whom a national cancer support group is named.

That's troubling to the Madison-area chapter of Gilda's Club, which decided to change its name in part because of concern that many don't know who Radner was. But the move prompted outrage from some Radner fans ? who saw it as a slight to a woman who confronted cancer with dignity and humor ? and led other chapters across the nation to hastily reaffirm they have absolutely no intention of changing their names.

Lannia Syren Stenz, the Madison-area club's executive director, said her organization decided to change its name to Cancer Support Community Southwest Wisconsin after it realized that most college students were born after Radner died in 1989.

"We are seeing younger and younger adults who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis," Stenz told the Wisconsin State Journal. "We want to make sure that what we are is clear to them and that there's not a lot of confusion that would cause people not to come in our doors."

Her comments angered some Radner fans, who let loose a storm of criticism on the organization's Facebook page.

"The only educating you're doing is teaching kids that when they die from cancer, their name will be erased from history in 20 years because the next generation doesn't know who they are. Way to give them hope!" wrote Mark Warneke, 44, a full-time college student in Arlington, Texas.

He told The Associated Press that taking Radner's name off the foundation was an insult to her memory.

Stenz referred questions from the AP to Linda House, executive vice president of the national group. House said there was no evidence that young people are unfamiliar with Radner and the name change was motivated by the desire to make the organization's mission clear. She called Stenz's comments "not accurate, period."

"Gilda Radner is very much a part of the fiber of this organization," House said. "There has never been an intent and there is no intent to lose Gilda as part of the organization."

Stenz's club held a ceremony Thursday to mark the name change, which will be phased in over the next month.

Radner, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986, sought support from The Wellness Community in California and wrote about her experience in her book "It's Always Something," a reference to one of her characters' catch-phrases.

Her friends and family started Gilda's Club in 1991 on the East Coast to honor her legacy. The name was inspired by something Radner said after her diagnosis: "Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club I'd rather not belong to."

Gilda's Club Worldwide merged with The Wellness Community in 2009, and the joint headquarters in Washington changed its name to the Cancer Support Community. Local chapters were given the choice of keeping their names or switching to Cancer Support Community, House said.

The 56 chapters around the world deliver $40 million a year in free care to about 1 million cancer patients and their families, she said. Of those chapters, 20 are known as Gilda's Club, three are Wellness Community and 23 are Cancer Support Community.

Changing the chapters' names made sense to Ron Nief, a professor at Beloit College in southern Wisconsin who has made a career out of studying how different generations view the world differently. He said it could become harder for Gilda's Club to attract donations as fewer people remember seeing Radner on TV.

"I think we all want to keep our traditions alive," he said, "but there comes a reality in this case of what does this group represent and how do we raise money for it."

Radner's husband, actor Gene Wilder, said he didn't like the name change but he understood it. He said if he had to break the news to his late wife she might ask, "Do they have to throw me out?"

"I'd say, 'It's not throwing you out, honey, it's getting more money.' And she'd say, 'OK, I guess if they have to, they have to,'" he said. "It's too bad. I wish it weren't so. But I understand."

The Wellness Center where Radner once sought support in Los Angeles was one of the groups that updated its name. Julia Forth, the marketing director of what's now called the Cancer Support Community Benjamin Center, said people who get sick Google the word cancer, so it helps to have that word in the name.

Other organizations were adamant about keeping the Gilda's Club name. LauraJane Hyde, who runs the Chicago chapter, said her group has spent 15 years teaching people that Radner's name was synonymous with cancer support, in the same way people know what Starbucks sells even though "coffee" isn't in its name.

"A lot of people feel very passionately about the name," she said. "We will lose donations if we change it."

Radner remains a strong presence at the Madison-area club even without her name on the building in the suburb of Middleton. Paintings and drawings of Radner line the walls. One depicts her on top of Madison's state Capitol. Another imagines her sitting along the shores of Lake Mendota on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The meeting rooms are named after her Saturday Night Live characters, including New York-street smart reporter Roseanne Roseannadana, out-of-sync editorialist Emily Litella and speech-impeded talk show host Baba Wawa, a parody of Barbara Walters.

Facebook proposes to end voting on privacy issues

Facebook is proposing to end its practice of letting users vote on changes to its privacy policies, though it will continue to let users comment on proposed updates. (AP) ? Facebook is proposing to end its practice of letting users vote on changes to its privacy policies, though it will continue to let users comment on proposed updates.

The world's biggest social media company said in a blog post Wednesday that its voting mechanism, which is triggered only if enough people comment on proposed changes, has become a system that emphasizes quantity of responses over quality of discussion. Users tend to leave one or two-word comments objecting to changes instead of more in-depth responses.

Facebook said it will continue to inform users of "significant changes" to its privacy policy, called its data use policy, and to its statement of user rights and responsibilities. The company will keep its seven-day comment period and take users' feedback into consideration.

"We will also provide additional notification mechanisms, including email, for informing you of those changes," wrote Elliot Schrage, Facebook's vice president of communications, public policy and marketing, in the post.

Facebook began letting users vote on privacy changes in 2009. Since then, it has gone public and its user base has ballooned from around 200 million to more than 1 billion. As part of the 2009 policy, users' votes only count if more than 30 percent of all Facebook's active users partake. That did not happen during either of the two times users voted and it's unlikely that it will now, given that more than 300 million people would have to participate.

Jules Polonetsky, director of the Future of Privacy Forum, an industry-backed think tank in Washington, said the voting process was a "noble experiment" that didn't lead to informed debate.

Facebook said in June that it was reviewing how to get the best feedback from users on its policies.

Facebook is also proposing changes to its data use policy, such as making it clear that when users hide a post or photo from their profile page, the "timeline," those posts are not truly hidden and can be visible elsewhere, including on another person's page.

Polonetsky called Facebook's data use policy "kind of a good handbook" and a "reasonable read" on how to navigate the site's complex settings.

But most people don't read the privacy policies of websites they frequent, even Facebook's.

"I certainly recommend that people read it, but most users just want to poke someone and like someone and look at a picture," Polonetsky said.

Facebook's task, he added, will be to continue to evolve its user interface ? the part of the site that its users interact with ? so that answers to questions are obvious and people don't need to wade through the policy.

Getting Marketing With Email To Work In Your Business - Businesses

Businesses are always looking for ways to lure more customers without affecting their bottom line too much. Marketing with email can prove to be the solution to your needs. If you aren?t familiar with this fantastic method for improving business, read on! The following information will explain how your business can benefit.

You can increase the loyalty of your customers by personalizing their emails. Send notifications concerning special offers and coupons. Tell them about any new products that they may find interesting, based on their purchase history. Once you gain a customer?s trust through that first sale, he or she will be more inclined to purchase more of your products.

Test your email messages to see how it will look on different platforms. Once you are satisfied with your message design, see how it looks in different web browsers, email clients, and all the major operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. The appearance of emails may vary when viewed on different email providers, such as Gmail or Hotmail.

TIP! Your emails should contain an incentive. Give them a persuasive reason to conduct business with you.

Build your email list organically. Avoid purchasing or renting lists of subscribers. Ask your customers, and anyone who shows interest in your products, to sign up to your mailing list. That way, your list will always be tailored toward boosting your business.

Use multi-part coding when you send out marketing via email messages, in order to grab a larger market share. Emails that provide plain text content, as well as HTML, ensure that the recipient can display the material. It may seem like extra work, but keeping subscribers makes it worth it in the long run. If you only use one delivery method, you could lose lots of potential readers.

TIP! Use a personal tone in all email marketing campaigns. Forgettable, generic messages will not bring in as many customer responses as personalized emails.

Keep track of the subject lines on e-mails that get opened and those that do not. Take one of your emails, and divide the mailing list in two. Send each half of the list the same mail, but with differing subject lines. This allows you to determine which subject lines are successful and which ones are simply ignored.

Utilize the data collected from your subscribers to enhance their shopping experience. When a subscriber clicks through to your website through an email, auto-fill the fields of purchasing forms with their information. Such steps taken to add convenience and speed to the buying process increase the odds of a successful sale.

As you are now aware, any business can use email marketing strategies to capture more consumers at a much cheaper cost than most other marketing campaigns. Because it is so reasonable to do, it makes sense to utilize email marketing. Use the tips you?ve found here to build your own successful campaign.

TIP! The confirmation link should be contained in the email opt-in section of your site. This ensures your messages only go to those who truly desire them.

The Dutch are online any time, any place

The internet has secured an increasingly prominent place in the everyday lives of the Dutch population, whether at home or at work. Nearly every section of the population is spending more time online and reaping more of the benefits. Having said this, the younger generation and highly qualified people seem to be benefiting the most and a new digital gap is looming on the horizon. The gap does not concern whether or not people are online, but whether they benefit from the internet or not. This is one of the conclusions of the Trend report on internet use 2012, written by the CTIT research institute at the University of Twente and commissioned by Digivaardig & Digiveilig. 96% of Dutch people (the highest percentage in Europe) now have physical access to internet at home. 87% use the internet every day, not only at home, but also at work or school and increasingly, while out and about. In the course of just one year, access to mobile internet via smart phones has risen from 31 to 42%, and via tablets from 10 to 27%. In 2012, Dutch people spent an average of 4 hours and 48 minutes of any given weekday (including leisure time) on the internet. On non-working days, this figure was 4 hours and 18 minutes. According to researchers Dr Alexander van Deursen and Prof. Jan van Dijk: ?Every Dutch person can be online at practically any time, any place. More and more people are getting online via laptops, tablets and smart phones and experiencing the huge benefits. Highly qualified people are making maximum use of the countless possibilities of today?s internet.? The findings will be presented today during the ECP annual conference in Scheveningen.

Alexander van Deursen from the University of Twente: ?On an average weekday, highly qualified people use the internet more than less well-qualified people. The opposite applies on non-working days. This difference in usage can be explained by the type of internet consumption people choose. Highly qualified people use the internet for information, education and career, while less well-qualified people focus more on entertainment such as gaming, chatting and watching films. More highly qualified people work from home via internet; 21% at least once a week. Only 6% of less well-qualified Dutch people do this.?

New digital gap
The trend survey for 2012 shows that across the board, everyone is reaping more benefits from the internet. The majority of benefits involve economic participation. Apart from economic advantages, the internet also serves an individual and social purpose. 28% of the Dutch population uses the internet to decide which way to vote, and 38% has signed an online petition. Thanks to the internet, 56% feel more up-to-date on government information and 28% has discovered a grant, social benefit or tax credit online. Internet also makes people more sociable: 58% of Dutch people say that they have more contact with family and friends thanks to the internet, and 33% have made new friends online. The researchers refer to a digital gap between the Dutch internet users. Not everyone is benefiting equally from increased internet usage. Alexander van Deursen: ?There are still vast differences between sections of the population. Those capitalizing most on the opportunities offered by the internet are highly qualified people, men more than women and the younger generation more than older people.?

Working population makes increasing use of the internet
When considering the working population (both men and women), 70% used the internet at work in 2012. Here too, highly qualified employees have more access to the internet (81%) than those that are less well-qualified. Alexander van Deursen: ?Internet has a positive effect at work. More than half of the respondents claim to work more effectively, efficiently and to a higher standard thanks to the internet. The boundaries between work and private life are being eroded. The amount of time employees spend on the internet sorting out their private affairs while at work is more than compensated by the time they spend on work via the internet while at home.?

Tineke Netelenbos, Chair of Digivaardig & Digiveilig: ?Internet provides fantastic economic and social opportunities. But a digital gap between sections of the population is looming, showing us that there is still a world to be won. Anyone who lags behind and doesn?t keep their digital skills up-to-date, whether at home or at work, will soon miss the boat.?

Social media
The trend survey also examined the use of social network sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. 77% of Dutch people use at least one social network, whereby Facebook (68% of adults over the age of 16) is by far the most popular. This is followed by Youtube (57%), Hyves (40%) and Google+ (32%). Students communicate extensively via Facebook (86%), and on average, more women use Facebook than men. Posting personal news information on the internet and participating in discussion forums now largely takes place via social media.

Online safety
Unlike in 2011, this year the Dutch are taking more measures to protect themselves on the internet. This might be due to the warning effect of several wide-scale internet hacks that recently hit the headlines. More Dutch people are using a virus scanner (increase from 82% to 87%) and more internet users regularly change their passwords (38% in 2012 as opposed to 31% in 2011).

This week, the Alert Online campaign was launched to make businesses and consumers more aware of the need to be careful when using internet and other forms of mobile communication.

Digivaardig & Digiveilig is a partnership of businesses, government and social sector organizations designed to enhance the digital skills of the Dutch population (working populations and consumers), and to promote confidence in IT and the internet by improving digital safety. The programme is supported by the Ministry for Economic Affairs, the European Commission and private partners KPN, UPC, NVB, IBM, SIDN, Ziggo and CA-ICT. More information is available on www.digivaardigdigiveilig.nl.

5 Tips for Healthy Skin | Health & Fitness

When it comes to keeping skin happy and healthy, there?s nothing we won?t try. And healthy skin doesn?t have to be costly either. Good skin care and a healthy lifestyle can keep your skin looking healthier longer. It can also delay the natural aging process and prevent various skin problems. Here are five simple tips to keeping your skin healthy:

Protect yourself from the sun

Forget the tanning bed. The best thing we can do for our skin is to protect it from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Exposure of UV rays can lead to unwanted wrinkles, age spots and worse, cancer. That?s why it?s important to always use sunscreen. Purchasing daily creams for face and body with SPF of at least 15 is a great way to keep skin looking healthy all year round.

Don?t smoke

Smoking is directly associated with premature ageing and wrinkles. Research shows that smoking depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that help maintain healthy skin.
