Wis Thompson says son sorry for Obama-Kenya remark

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Republican Senate candidate Tommy Thompson's campaign says his son apologizes for suggesting voters in the fall election should send President Barack Obama back to Kenya.

Jason Thompson, the son of the former Wisconsin governor, was caught on camera Sunday making those remarks duing a brunch hosted by the Kenosha County Republican Party.

"We have the opportunity to send President Obama back to Chicago ? or Kenya," said Jason Thompson, an attorney at a large Milwaukee law firm.

The comment drew laughs from the crowd, with one woman jokingly adding, "We are taking donations for that Kenya trip."

The video was taken by a Democratic Party operative and posted at BuzzFeed Politics on Sunday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Obama's father was Kenyan, but the president was born in Hawaii.

Jason Thompson, 38, has been involved in his father's efforts to win a Senate seat and has represented the candidate at some events.

"The governor has addressed this with his son, just like any father would do," the campaign said in a statement. "Jason Thompson said something he should not have, and he apologizes."

Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin is running against Thompson. Her campaign's spokesman, John Kraus, said Monday that the Thompson campaign is becoming increasingly desperate and dishonest.

The candidate himself "has not apologized for these comments, nor has he disavowed them," Kraus wrote. "Thompson needs to start taking responsibility for what his campaign says and does."

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Brad Courtney also spoke at the Kenosha event.

Priebus issued a statement Monday, saying he agreed with Gov. Thompson. "The comment was out of line and his son rightfully apologized," he said.

Iran: Hezbollah drone proves our capabilities

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's defense minister said Sunday that Hezbollah's launch of a drone into Israeli airspace earlier this week proves the Islamic Republic's military capabilities, state TV reported.

The statement by Gen. Ahmad Vahidi was Iran's first official acknowledgement that the Lebanese militant group's drone used Iranian technology. It came a few days after Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah claimed responsibility for the launch and said the drone was manufactured in Iran and assembled in Lebanon.

"Great job by Hezbollah," Gen. Vahidi said. "The era in which the Zionist regime (Israel) could think it has regional supremacy is over."

Israeli warplanes shot down the unmanned plane, but the infiltration marked a rare breach of Israel's tightly guarded airspace.

Vahidi said Hezbollah had the right to launch the drone since Israeli warplanes routinely overfly Lebanon. Nasrallah warned that it would not be the last such operation by the group.

Iran routinely announces technological breakthroughs in its defense program. Last month it claimed to have started producing a long-range missile-carrying drone, months after it said it was reverse-engineering an American unmanned aircraft that went down in Iranian territory last year.

The defense minister reiterated Tehran's position that the Jewish state does not have the capability to act against Iran. Israel has not ruled out a military strike against Iran's nuclear program, which the West suspects are aimed at developing weapons. Iran denies the charge, saying its nuclear activities are only geared toward peaceful purposes like power generation and cancer treatment.

Hezbollah, a powerful Shiite group committed to Israel's destruction, has long served as an Iranian proxy along Israel's northern border. Israel and Hezbollah fought a brutal month-long war in mid-2006. Hundreds of people were killed, and Hezbollah fired several thousand rockets and missiles into Israel before the conflict ended in a stalemate.

Giant eyeball mystery solved in Florida

Florida Fish and Wildife via Flickr

The eyeball that caused a sensation was cut from a swordfish's head, apparently by a fisherman, scientists say.

By Alan Boyle

The giant eyeball from Florida that captured the world's attention came from a swordfish, scientists reported today. They said straight-line slashes on the softball-sized orb suggest that it was freshly cut out of the fish's head by a fisherman and tossed overboard. The fact that it washed ashore and was found by a beachcomber so quickly contributed to a rare string of circumstances that sparked last week's collective "ewws" and "ahhs."

"It's definitely been unusual to have a situation quite like this," Kevin Baxter, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, told me today. The commission has been fielding tons of inquiries ever since pictures of the eerie eyeball turned up on Thursday. If you haven't seen them yet, be sure to check out the commission's Facebook page and Flickr gallery.

Observers had speculated that the eye might have come from a large fish, or a giant squid, or even a whale?? but in retrospect, the scenario involving a swordfish caught at sea seems to make the most sense. Genetic testing is being conducted to confirm the hypothesis.

Here's the explanation from the commission's news release:

"After examining an eye found on a south Florida beach this week, researchers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission believe the specimen came from a swordfish. Genetic testing will be done to confirm the identification.

"'Experts on site and remotely have viewed and analyzed the eye, and based on its color, size and structure, along with the presence of bone around it, we believe the eye came from a swordfish,' said Joan Herrera, curator of collections at the FWC?s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg. 'Based on straight-line cuts visible around the eye, we believe it was removed by a fisherman and discarded.'

"The approximately softball-size eye was recovered by a citizen in Pompano Beach on Wednesday. FWC staff received the eye later that day. Swordfish are commonly fished in the Florida Straits offshore of south Florida at this time of year.

"A highly migratory fish, swordfish can be found from the surface to as deep as 2,000 feet. Swordfish in the Atlantic can reach a maximum size of over 1,100 pounds, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Swordfish feed on a wide variety of fish and invertebrates."

PFT: Jets' run game shows up, Colts pay

Robert Griffin IIIAP

The Vikings proved they were mortal, Robert Griffin III proved he had no complications from last week?s concussion, and the Redskins proved they could win at home.

An early interception was nearly the only mistake Griffin made, leading the Redskins to a 38-26 win over the Vikings, snapping an eight-game home losing streak that dated back to September 2011 and pushing them to 3-3.

Griffin finished the game in style, turning a four-minute offense scramble into a 76-yard touchdown, capping a brilliant final three quarters.

He finished the game with 13 carries for 138 yards and two touchdowns, with another 182 passing yards and a score.

For the Vikings (4-2), the problem was clear. Their first four trips to the red zone yielded four Blair Walsh field goals, and their defense had no answers for Griffin once the first quarter ended.

There was a moment when Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder looked nothing like the efficient guy who didn?t throw a single pick in the first four games. He now has four in the last two games, including one Sunday returned for a touchdown by Madieu Williams, and one in the last minute which didn?t matter all that much.

But after the pick-six, he responded with a pair of touchdown drives, giving the Vikings a shot after they trailed by 19.

Percy Harvin was brilliant (11 catches for 133 yards) and Adrian Peterson was good (17 carries for 79 yards).

But in the end, Griffin was back, and he was the difference.

Mitt Romney's '$5 trillion tax cut': 5 things you should know

Romney has proposed about $5 trillion in specific, gross tax cuts over the next decade relative to current policy, most but not all of which would go to high-income taxpayers. He has also promised to offset a substantial portion of those cuts?presumably in the trillions of dollars?by reducing deductions and other tax breaks.

By Donald Marron,?Guest blogger / October 14, 2012

Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney waves to the crowd as he arrives for a rally in Richmond, Va., Friday, Oct. 12, 2012. There is speculation that Romney will propose nearly $5 trillion in tax cuts. Marron argues that without specifics, that figure is merely speculative.

You?ve probably heard claims that Mitt Romney wants to cut taxes by $5 trillion. Here are five things you should know about that figure:

1. $5 trillion is the gross amount of tax cuts he has proposed, not the net impact of all his intended tax reforms.

Governor Romney has been very specific about the taxes he would cut. Most notably, he would reduce today?s individual income tax rates by one-fifth (so the 10 percent bracket would fall to 8 percent, the 35 percent to 28 percent, etc.) and reduce the corporate income tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent. In addition, he would eliminate the alternative minimum tax (AMT), the estate tax, the taxes created in 2010?s health reform act, and taxes on capital gains, dividends, and interest for incomes up to $200,000 ($100,000 for singles). The $5 trillion figure reflects the revenue impact of all those cuts.

But Romney has also said that he intends his reforms to be revenue-neutral, with the specified revenue losses being offset by a combination of economic growth and unspecified cuts in deductions and other tax preferences. The net impact of his reforms would undoubtedly be less than $5 trillion, perhaps much less if he?s aggressive in going after tax breaks or willing to compromise on some of his other tax reform goals (e.g., not raising taxes on investment income). Without any details about what he would do, however, we can?t measure the net revenue impact of his ideas.

2.?$5 trillion is a 10-year extrapolation from a TPC estimate for 2015.

TPC has?estimated?that the gross tax cuts proposed by Romney would amount to $456 billion in 2015. Budget debates in Washington often focus on ten-year periods, so commentators have coalesced around a natural, if imprecise, extrapolation: multiply by 10 and round up because of a growing economy. Result: $5 trillion over ten years.

3.?$5 trillion does not include the impact of permanently extending many expiring tax cuts, including those from 2001 and 2003.

In budget parlance, the $5 trillion is measured against a current policy baseline, not a current law one. TPC?s current policy baseline assumes that many expiring tax cuts, including the 2001 and 2003 cuts, the AMT patch, the current version of the estate tax, and the tax credits enacted or expanded in 2009 will all be extended permanently. Romney proposes to extend all of these except the 2009 credits. Because it is measured against current policy, the $5 trillion figure does not include the revenue impact of any of those extensions (but does include a small revenue increase from expiration of the credits).

The current law baseline assumes all tax cuts expire as scheduled yielding almost $5 trillion more revenue than does current policy. Relative to current law, Romney?s tax proposal would thus be roughly a $10 trillion gross tax cut. (The same issue arises with President Obama?s tax proposals, which?we estimate?amount to a $2.1 trillion net tax increase relative to current policy, but a $2.8 trillion net tax cut relative to current law.)

4.?$5 trillion includes more than $1 trillion in gross tax cuts for families earning $200,000 or less.

Governor Romney?s specified tax cuts would go primarily to high-income taxpayers for a simple reason: they pay a large share of taxes and thus get a large benefit from a proportional reduction in tax rates. But that doesn?t mean that all the tax cuts go to top earners. Middle- and upper-middle income taxpayers would also get a gross tax reduction because of the reduction in tax rates, the elimination of taxes on capital gains, dividends, and interest for low and middle incomes, and, for some, the elimination of the AMT. Those gross tax cuts amount to more than $1 trillion over ten years.

5.?$5 trillion includes around $1 trillion in gross tax cuts for corporations.

Cutting the corporate income tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent would lower corporate tax revenues by roughly $1 trillion over the next decade. Little-discussed in the current debate is whether and how Governor Romney would offset this revenue loss.

As he has rightly noted,?corporate taxes are ultimately borne by people, including workers and shareholders. Most of the corporate rate reductions would ultimately benefit high-income taxpayers since they own more investment assets and earn higher labor income. But about two-fifths of the benefit would go to low-, middle-, and upper-middle income workers and investors.

Bottom line: Governor Romney has proposed about $5 trillion in specific, gross tax cuts over the next decade relative to current policy, most but not all of which would go to high-income taxpayers. He has also promised to offset a substantial portion of those cuts?presumably in the trillions of dollars?by reducing deductions and other tax breaks, primarily for high-income households. Lacking any specifics, however, we can?t know what net tax cut, if any, he proposes.

The 5 Big Mistakes In The Kettlebell Swing (And How To Fix Them ...

Kettlebell Swing OutsideWhen properly performed, the kettlebell swing is a masterpiece of total body muscle activation that offers massive benefits including fat loss, lean muscle building, cardiovascular enhancement, and literally any other fitness goal you can imagine.

Yes, the exercise is that good.

But, the key words here are ?when performed properly.?

The benefits are endless, as I just mentioned. ?And, if you?ve done them properly you know exactly what I mean.

The problem, however, is that most people think they can perform this exercise quite easily.

Let me just tell you that after years of training and thousands of reps, I?m STILL working on my swing.

Yep, that?s right. ?It?s not just picking up a kettlebell and swinging it.

You can do that if you don?t want to maximize your results AND potentially injure yourself OR you can learn how to perform the exercise correctly.

You see the difference?

As movement expert and Master RKC Brett Jones puts it, there is a major difference between ?swinging a kettlebell? and ?performing a kettlebell swing.?

Perform the swing to get max results and exercise safely, end of story.

Now, that we?ve established why it?s important to perform the swing, let me share the most common mistakes I see.

MISTAKE #1

Squatting during the swing.

If you take one thing away from this article, please remember this as it?s very important.

The swing is NOT a squat. ?Again, the swing is NOT a squat.

The kettlebell swing is a ?hip hinge? pattern. ?This is very important because the hip hinging is where power comes from with this exercise (more about this in mistake #2).

And, a proper hip hinge will save your back. ?A proper hip hinge does not stress your back because your spine should maintain a neutral position throughout the swing.

The squat is a squat and the swing is NOT a squat (despite all the poor instructional YouTube videos you?ll see out there).

The Fix: ?

Don?t squat, instead learn how to ?hip hinge? through the movement. ?You can what that looks in this short?video.

For a great drill on how to do a hip hinge, definitely watch this short video I recently posted.

MISTAKE #2

Not using the power of your?gluteus?maximus.

GlutesThe gluteus maximus is the largest, most powerful muscle in your body. ?Use it, especially during the kettlebell swing which is made effective by using the power of your glutes.

The swing is highly effectively when exploding through the movement with a powerful hip drive.

Most people have to ?re-learn? how to use their hips again when learning how to swing.

And, many people have what?s called ?gluteal amnesia,? meaning they have forgotten how to use their glutes.

It?s takes good coaching, practice, and some feedback to learn how to use the glutes again.

The Fix:

Every time you swing through and finish the hip drive, make sure your glutes are squeezed tightly!

This is going to sound funny, but imagine you have a coin pinched between your cheeks (glutes).

Well, ?pinch the coin? every time you swing through. ?As you complete your forward swing, your glutes should be ?rock hard? and tight.

Consciously remind yourself to ?pinch a coin? every time you swing the bell until it becomes automatic.

This is a critical component of an effective, powerful kettlebell swing.

MISTAKE #3

Using the deltoids to elevate the kettlebell.

In the Russian kettlebell swing, the kettlebell doesn?t go overhead. ?If you want to take the kettlebell overhead, do the kettlebell snatch instead.

While there are different variations of the swing, the one that I have found to be most effective is the Russian swing.

And, in the Russsian swing, the kettlebell is propelled forward by the explosive hip drive and power breathing (more on that later).

The arms are simply ?along for the ride? here.

The deltoids aren?t elevating the kettlebell, however, the rotator cuff muscles (deep shoulder muscles) are firing the entire time of the swing to ?hold? the ball in the socket (the humoral head in the glenoid).

I always tell people not to activate the deltoids when swinging through, just let the kettlebell ?float? up when coming forward by way of the explosive hip drive.

You don?t need to activate the deltoids in the Russian swing. ?Again, this is the most effective technique, in my opinion.

The Fix:

Just let the kettlebell ?float? forward by the powerful hip drive and gluteus maximus activation. ?Don?t use the shoulders to elevate the kettlebell.

It make take some practice and everyone learns differently, but remember, you don?t need to use the shoulders and ?actively? raise the kettlebell in the swing.

There are other kettlebelll exercises to better address the deltoids and other shoulder muscles.

MISTAKE #4

Moving too slowly through the movement.

One of the mistakes I made when learning how to to the kettlebell swing was that I not not swinging explosively through the movement.

Again, it goes back to mistake #2 and not using your powerful hip extensors, primarily your gluteus maximus.

As you learn how to use these hip muscles, the swing will be a faster, smoother, and a much more powerful exercise for you.

It?s not a slow, controlled movement, but a quick, efficient, well executed hip hinge with explosive hip drive.

The Fix:

When you?ve corrected the other things above, this mistake should take care of itself.

One thing to remember though. ?Faster does not mean sloppy by any means. ?No matter what it has to be a safe and very efficient movement.

It is a faster type of movement (a?ballistic? to be precise), but it?s not at all unsafe when performed properly.

MISTAKE #5

Not breathing properly.

This is actually quite a big topic. ?As a matter of fact, I?m putting together a video to show you this one.

Sometimes breathing is not emphasized enough, but it really makes a huge difference. ? It?s not just a regular breathing pattern, but a systematic and patterned breathing approach.

Proper breathing is absolutely critical to performing this exercise correctly.

Power breathing or biomechanical match breathing?(as it?s appropriately called) provides you more power, efficiency, and safety to maximize the benefits of the exercise.

As you could imagine, proper breathing will be key during the swing. ?This is very important for safety and for spinal stability during the movement.

There?s a compression and stabilization of your midsection that should occur as you swing the bell through, which should feel natural and powerful.

As a matter of fact, it is this that makes the kettlebell swing one of the very best exercises for back ?health? and injury prevention.

It?s a forceful exhalation with coming forward, that is released in controlled manner.

Power breathing is powerful.

The Fix:

Practice diaphragmatic breathing by inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.

You want to make sure that you can see or feel your stomach move in and out and expand with the inhalation. ?You shouldn?t see your chest rise.

The stomach movement in and out is your diaphragm functioning properly and breathing appropriately as opposed to using accessory muscles in your chest and rib cage.

Now, when you have this down, practice the kettlebell swing the same way. ?Breath in through your nose as your hiking the kettlebell back and exhale out in a controlled, forceful breath as you swing the ketttlebell forward.

Practicing proper breathing technique will pay off big time in your performance and efficiency with this exercise, guaranteed.

More on proper breathing will be coming, as this is a big topic.

In summary, there are some common mistakes with the kettlebell swing.

The good thing is all of them can easily be avoided and corrected with proper instruction, practice, and some form of feedback.

If you?re training by yourself, then I recommend filming yourself and then watching your swing.

You will learn a lot just by seeing yourself. ?This is very effective for cleaning up bad habits.

Let?s review some of the most common mistakes which are:

  1. Doing a squat instead of a hip hinge.
  2. Not using the hips with explosive hip drive.
  3. Using the deltoids to elevate the kettlebell (*in the Russian style swing)
  4. Moving too slow through the movement.
  5. Not breathing properly.

Understanding these critical mistakes will pay off in maximizing your performance and getting a better result.

I know the swing may seem easy, but there?s actually a lot more to it, especially if you want outstanding results.

These are some of the most common mistakes, but there can be other things going on, as well.

My advice is to practice, practice, practice?that?s exactly what ?I tell myself all the time.

Practice makes a big difference. ?Seek mastery in the movement, but don?t expect perfection.

No matter if you?re just beginning or at an advanced level, practice will always make a big difference and we can all continue to improve our technique.

Hope this was helpful in cleaning up your skills.

Video: Released report accuses Armstrong of doping

>>> we're now learning more about the u.s. anti-doping agency's case against lance armstrong that led to the seven-time tour de france winner's life-time ban from the sport. he's denied cheating and long asked for proof. and now the agency is providing it. nbc's mike taibbi has more on this.

>> good morning, matt. in no less than 1,000 pages of evidence and testimony, including lab tests and sworn statements by armstrong 's teammates, the icon is painted as a user and supplier for the team of performance-enhancing drugs. also described as the leader of what the usda calls the most sophisticated and professionalized doping program in recent sports history . from 1999 on, lance armstrong won seven straight tour de france titles. he'd risen from the pinnacle from the death rattle of cancer. it made armstrong among the most recognizable, influential, and wealthy athletes in the world. but the usada says championships he collected while running with the u.s. postal service team were won by cheating.

>> he was the leader on the team. the team built its success, doping and otherwise, around him, to ensure he won those tour de frances.

>> the agency says retesting of blood samples taken as far back from 1999 showed a clear finding of epo. 11 of his teammates testified, several saying in sworn states they had direct knowledge that armstrong used drugs of said he gave them drugs. armstrong 's best friend on the team said he was aware that lance was using testosterone, epo, and blood transfusions . and tyler hamilton told matt on "today" what he told the agency, that are armstrong once paid his way out of a positive drug test .

>> it's the truth. it's the truth.

>> reporter: armstrong has denied doping allegations for years, even addressing the subject in one of his commercials for nike.

>> everybody wants to know what i'm on. what am i on? i'm on my bike six hours a day. what are you on?

>> reporter: but armstrong declined to challenge the agency's findings and says he will no longer address this issue regardless of the circumstances. his live strong charity, which has raised nearly $500 million for cancer research hasn't suffered so far.

>> we've raised two times what is normal.

>> reporter: and speaking of an era in pro cycling, when almost every top rider has admitted or suspected of cheating, armstrong 's lawyer said all of armstrong 's accusers would agree on one thing.

>> that armstrong was the best, the most talented, the most gifted, the hardest working, and the most focused rider who on a level playing field would've won everything that he won.

>> and what has armstrong lost? well, the chance to race again competitively, perhaps millions in prize money that he's won, and for many, a good part of his gold-plated reputation. but he still has the live strong charity in support of so many who see him as a leader in the fight against cancer. in fact, late wednesday, he tweeted to his millions of followers, what am i doing tonight? hanging with my family unaffected and thinking about this. and he linked to the live strong site. matt?

>> mike, thank you very much.

Movie review: Seven Psychopaths | canada.com

To say writers are tortured souls hardly breaks stereotype. People who spend all day staring at a computer screen, conjuring words from the ether and forever weaving layers of fantasy and reality into written prose are people who live inside their own head.

For some, the landscape that lies above the neck can be a peaceful, idyllic place where fluffy lambs graze on perpetually green pastures. But for most writers, it?s a bloody battlefield where severed chunks of copy lie next to disembowelled works of genius ? and the white-eyed drill sergeant called self-esteem calls you worthless.

Marty (Colin Farrell) knows the deal. Marty was a big writer back in the day. He won prizes, had hot girlfiends and bought himself a nice house in Los Angeles. All he needed to do was write another hit, which is proving far more difficult than Marty could have imagined. Not even wine seems to be helping.

Fortunately for Marty, he?s got some very imaginative friends ? and before the first scene even ends, they?re throwing ideas in his direction.

The most helpful creative muse is Billy (Sam Rockwell), a fast-talking con artist who spends his days lying poolside with his model squeeze, or else helping Hans (Christopher Walken) kidnap dogs from the local park, and then claim the reward money.

They aren?t upstanding citizens, but for all their flaws, there?s something undeniably charming about each one of them, which immediately pulls us to the heaving chest of this ultra-violent black comedy.

Though Seven Psychopaths has been compared to Quentin Tarantino?s work for its cartoonish trail of blood and deadpan violence, director-writer Martin McDonagh is a whole lot smarter than Tarantino ? not on any smarmy, obnoxious way, but a dramatic one.

Where Tarantino relies on cinematic device to do a lot of the heavy lifting, with choreographed action sequences and well-timed gore, McDonagh lets his pen do all the work.

Seven Psychopaths is a very chatty movie, especially given its manly form. Every central character is male, and even McDonagh makes a note of it in the dialogue, as he gives Billy the role of self-conscious movie monitor.

Billy offers several asides to Marty over the course of the film, expanding on the lack of good roles for women, and the sexist component to moviemaking in general. It?s funny stuff because it?s all entirely accurate.

Moreover, the entire saga unfolds in the moist creases of Hollywood?s half-famous talent pool, where Michael Pitt and Harry Dean Stanton don?t mind being a day player for a decent payday.

Marty feels above the fray, but when Hans and Billy take the wrong dog hostage, any sense of superiority evaporates because the man who owns the dog is a gangster, and he?ll stop at nothing to be reunited with his shih tzu ? no matter how many must die.

Yep. It?s over-the-top, and it could be exhausting, but the story pulls us into the chop because the characters have so much dimension ? and so much to say.

Whether it?s a cameo from Tom Waits, who answers an ad for psychopaths and offers a story of Amish heartbreak, or Woody Harrelson cranking into high gear as the toy breed fanatic with a violent personality, the men in this movie seem baffled by their own behaviour.

There almost seems to be a hand of destiny pushing them down the road like so many Hot Wheels on a collision course. And really, that?s sort of what this movie feels like: A highly engineered and brightly coloured crash-up derby.

McDonagh lays out the orange tracks in every room in the house and sends each car flying out the bedroom window into a bucket of water below. Half the fun is just watching the action ? even when it makes very little sense, has no motivational credibility and feels somewhat amoral.

Rockwell and Walken bounce off Farrell?s tightly wound writer like pinballs off a flipper, crashing into the world outside, and lighting up dark corners of the playing surface with their bright, reflective, but impenetrable presence.

Throw Harrelson in there and it?s a great big ham sandwich.

Farrell actually has the most sedate role, but it?s also the most important because it provides the access door to this alternate reality. He provides the role of straight man in the human comedy ? and because he?s such a good actor he makes it look easy.

Not that performance is the first thing you?ll really appreciate in this unholy, and highly entertaining, mess. The familiar mix of blood and yuks will be the first thing you notice. It?s only when McDonagh takes it further than you dared expect that you start to notice the writing, and begin to see the delicate layers of dialogue and the tiny cogs in his machine.

Anything this violent and immoral shouldn?t be so much fun, and even McDonagh knows it ? which is no doubt why he went to such great lengths to torture his fame-starved, ego-needy screenwriter from start to finish as he searches to reclaim his lost puppy of soul.

Boeing to Build 702HP Communications Satellite for SES

  • Lighter satellite allows for maximum payload capacity
  • The 11th spacecraft ordered by European satellite operator will cover Asia

Boeing [NYSE: BA] has been selected by SES S.A. [Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG] to provide a new satellite that will expand direct-to-home broadcasting and other communications services to the fast-growing markets of Northeast Asia, South Asia and Indonesia, as well as maritime communications for vessels in the Indian Ocean. SES-9 -- ordered through SES' affiliate company SES Satellite Leasing Ltd. -- will be a Ku-band 702 High Power (HP) satellite.

Boeing has a 25-year relationship with Luxembourg-based SES. This is the 11th spacecraft that SES has ordered from Boeing and the contract includes an option for another. Financial details are not being disclosed.

SES-9 will be built in Boeing?s El Segundo Satellite Development Center and is designed to operate for 15 years in geosynchronous orbit with a 12.7-kilowatt payload and 57 high-power Ku-band transponders, equivalent to 81 36-MHz transponders.

"We look forward to working again with Boeing on an important addition to our global fleet," said Romain Bausch, president and CEO of SES. "SES-9 will greatly expand our transmission capacity over Asia, while adding increased flexibility and redundancy to a strategic orbital slot. SES is convinced that Boeing's 702HP will prove to be mission-critical in order to provide state-of-the-art, high-power satellite capacity to the thriving markets of Asia."

"We are pleased to be selected by SES to build a highly flexible 702HP satellite, which has a uniquely configured xenon ion propulsion system and chemical bi-propellant system, reducing the spacecraft's launch weight while allowing for maximum payload capacity," said Craig Cooning, CEO of Boeing Satellite Systems International and vice president and general manager of Boeing Space & Intelligence Systems. "Boeing has continuously evolved the 702 design since it was introduced over 15 years ago, allowing us to provide SES a satellite that will be consistent with their business requirements."

The spacecraft will be positioned at 108.2 degrees east longitude and provide incremental as well as replacement capacity to this well-established SES slot over Asia. SES-9 will be colocated with SES? existing SES-7 and NSS-11 satellites.

An image grab shows Muluka during an interview on Jeff Koinage?s Capital Talk Show/K24

A statement from Odinga?s chief campaign manager Eliud Owalo said Muluka has opted out of the secretariat to pursue further studies.

?This is to let you know that Barrack has now relinquished the position of National Director of Communications at the secretariat, on a pre-negotiated understanding at the time of his engagement in February 2012,? read the statement released on Thursday.

Owalo said Muluka planned to undertake doctorate studies in politics and international relations at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom.

The Odinga campaign team said it would retain Muluka as a special consultant and principal advisor to the secretariat on public communications and media relations.

There have been unconfirmed reports that Muluka will be replaced by another veteran Salim Lone who would double as Odinga?s spokesman and media director.

What Is The Security Difference Between Native Apps And Web Apps?

For years we have all used our computers will a lot of glee. They helped us get our work done and they also helped us enjoy ourselves. There is a lot that you can do with a computer no matter if it is work or if it is play. But then when the internet was introduced there was a whole different dimension to the computing experience added. Now you had a world that you could go to outside of the computer that was on your desk. Now you could communicate with people from all over the world and they could communicate with you. And you could do all of this without having to leave the room that you were in.

web-apps

The modern day internet also adds another experience that people?did not expect to happen. Now when you are on the internet you can use?applications that you would normally have to install on your computer. In the?past if you wanted to write a term paper while you were in college you had to?use Microsoft Word. Now all you have to do is to log into Google and use their Google?docs service. You are able to get the same kind of service that you would when?you are using Microsoft Word. And it?s the same thing with a lot of services?these days. There are a lot of apps that you can get online that previously you?would only be able to use if you had installed them into the computer. But what?does that mean when it comes to security?

It does not matter if you have a web app or if you have a native app installed on your computer; security is always going to be a concern that you have to worry about. The bad guys have learned ways to crack into both over the years so do not think that just because you use one type of app over the other that you do not have to worry about it. The only difference is the type of security problems that you have to worry about.

The security of web apps

When it comes to web apps, the problems that you have to worry about with them is the same as the problems you have to worry about with regular web pages. These problems include XSS attacks, sql injections, JavaScript exploits and other attacks of that nature. You have to be on the alert even more when it comes to these attacks because when you have a web app people interact with the page even more than they normally would. With a normal page they would just read the content and then click the link to go to the next page. When it comes to web apps, depending on the application, will determine how much interaction there will be on the web page. But as we said earlier, there is a good chance that there will be more than with a regular web page.

The security of native apps

When it comes to native apps the security is based on if the bad guys are able to get to the program. While you are on the web the app is available to the public. When you are dealing with a native app, the software is installed on the computer or the phone. But if the bad guys are able to get to the app, they can reverse engineer it or find a hole and exploit it just like they would with a web app.

Overall it does not matter what type of app you use, you just have?to remember to stay safe.

Fabulous Fiction Firsts #359 | Ann Arbor District Library

Wednesday, October 10th at 7pm, author Peter Geye will be at Nicola's for a discussion and signing of his new novel The Lighthouse Road, in which a young immigrant woman in 1890s Duluth, finds herself alone in a new country, abandoned and adrift. In the early 1920s, her orphan son, now grown, falls in love with the one woman he shouldn't and uses his best skills to build them their own small ark to escape. "Peter Geye has crafted another deeply moving tale of a misbegotten family shaped by the rough landscape in which they live--often at the mercy of wildlife and weather."

His first novel Safe from the Sea (in audio, nicely performed by David Aaron Bake), is "an archetypal story of a father and son, of the tug and pull of family bonds, (and) of Norwegian immigrant culture". Antique map-dealer Noah Torrs reluctantly returns from Boston to the lakeside cabin north of Duluth to spend time with his estranged father Olaf, who is dying. Once a curmudgeonly, headstrong ship's captain, and one of three survivors from the coal freighter Ragnarok that sank on Lake Superior, Olaf is still haunted after 35 years by the memory a friend he felt he could have saved and the catastrophic repercussions for his young family.

"Geye tackles the subjects of death, dying, and living with admirable insight and courage." For readers who enjoy David Guterson, Robert Olmstead , and Joseph Boyden.

A Minnesota native, Peter Geye (webiste) received his Ph.D. from Western Michigan University , where he taught Creative Writing and was editor of Third Coast.

Calif. initiative will test appetite for GMO food

A product labeled with Non Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is sold at the Lassens Natural Foods & Vitamins store in Los Feliz district of Los Angeles Friday, Oct. 5, 2012. International food and chemical conglomerates are spending millions to defeat California's Proposition 37, which would require labeling on all food made with altered genetic material. It also would prohibit labeling or advertising such food as "natural." (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

(AP) ? Calories. Nutrients. Serving size. How about "produced with genetic engineering?"

California voters will soon decide whether to require certain raw and processed foods to carry such a label.

In a closely watched test of consumers' appetite for genetically modified foods, the special label is being pushed by organic farmers and advocates who are concerned about what people eat even though the federal government and many scientists contend such foods are safe.

More than just food packaging is at stake. The outcome could reverberate through American agriculture, which has long tinkered with the genes of plants to reduce disease, ward off insects and boost the food supply.

International food and chemical conglomerates, including Monsanto Co. and DuPont Co., have contributed about $35 million to defeat Proposition 37 on the November ballot. It also would ban labeling or advertising genetically altered food as "natural." Its supporters have raised just about one-tenth of that amount.

If voters approve the initiative, California would become the first state to require disclosure of a broad range of foods containing genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Food makers would have to add a label or reformulate their products to avoid it. Supermarkets would be charged with making sure their shelves are stocked with correctly labeled items.

Genetically altered plants grown from seeds engineered in the laboratory have been a mainstay for more than a decade. Much of the corn, soybean, sugar beets and cotton cultivated in the United States today have been tweaked to resist pesticides or insects. Most of the biotech crops are used for animal feed or as ingredients in processed foods including cookies, cereal, potato chips and salad dressing.

Proponents say explicit labeling gives consumers information about how a product is made and allows them to decide whether to choose foods with genetically modified ingredients.

"They're fed up. They want to know what's in their food," said Stacy Malkan, spokeswoman for the California Right to Know campaign.

Agribusiness, farmers and retailers oppose the initiative, claiming it would lead to higher grocery bills and leave the state open to frivolous lawsuits. Kathy Fairbanks, spokeswoman for the No on 37 campaign, said labels would be interpreted as a warning and confuse shoppers.

"It's not necessary. Worse, it leaves people with the impression that there's something wrong with the food. That's not the case," she said.

The government approves genetically engineered plants and animals on a case-by-case basis, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture restricts the use of GMO crops that might harm other plants. The Food and Drug Administration can only require labeling if a genetically altered food is different ? in taste, for example ? from its non-engineered version or known to cause allergies.

The World Health Organization has said no ill health effects have resulted from GMO foods currently on the international market. The American Medical Association sees "no scientific justification for special labeling of bioengineered foods" but favors stricter testing before they hit stores.

Still, some consumers are wary and are increasingly demanding to know what's on their dinner plates. With California a trendsetter on other issues, whatever happens in the nation's most populous state could spill onto the national stage.

Already, at least 19 states this year have introduced GMO labeling bills, but none passed.

Alaska, with its dominant wild salmon industry, requires labels on genetically engineered fish, though none is currently on the market. Maine allows GMO-free products to be labeled as such.

The FDA is evaluating a petition to label genetically engineered foods nationwide; the group spearheading that effort is separate from California's initiative.

The push comes as genetic engineering is expanding beyond traditional crops. Last year, agricultural regulators approved the planting of genetically modified alfalfa, angering organic farmers who feared cross-contamination. An application is pending on an Atlantic salmon that has been genetically manipulated to grow twice as fast as a regular salmon.

California's ballot initiative would require most raw foods such as fruits and vegetables and processed foods by 2014 to bear the label "partially produced with genetic engineering" or "may be partially produced with genetic engineering." Meat and dairy products would be exempt even if the animals are fed with biotech grains. Organic foods, restaurant meals and alcohol are also excluded.

Supermarkets and other retailers would be in charge of making sure products for sale are properly labeled. Spot checks would be carried out by California Department of Public Health inspectors. The nonpartisan California Legislative Analyst's Office estimates that it could cost up to $1 million a year to regulate.

The initiative also allows individuals or groups to sue if they find food has been mislabeled. The California Grocers Association said supermarkets will do their best to comply if the measure passes, but noted it would be taxing on store owners. The group also fears being the target of lawsuits.

Association President Ronald Fong said it will be a burden for grocers to check the label of every box and keep track of their efforts in case they get sued.

"It's going to be a complete paperwork nightmare," he said.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which advocates for food safety, has not taken a side on the initiative. But Gregory Jaffe, the group's biotechnology director, favors giving the government more regulatory power over biotech crops.

"The solution is not labels," he said.

Workplace dating policies: Employer's guide ? Business ...

Office romances can not only have an adverse effect on workplace productivity, but can engender claims of favoritism, sexual harassment and retaliation.? So employers should consider implementing a policy covering this topic.

However, it is important to assess the pros and cons of strict workplace dating policies, and take into account how to handle both managers and subordinates under such a policy, as well as the steps to take to prevent such policies from raising privacy concerns.

While it's not illegal to demote, transfer, or even fire an employee who is dating a co-worker, supervisor, or subordinate in his/her department, if you don't have a specific no-dating policy, you could be setting yourself up for future legal battles.
