Somalia's al Shabaab rebels pull out of Kismayu bastion

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somalia's al Shabaab rebels withdrew from their last major bastion of Kismayu overnight, the group and residents said, a day after Kenyan and Somali government forces attacked the southern port.

The loss of Kismayu will deal a major blow to the al Qaeda-linked movement, weakening morale and depriving it of revenue, but is unlikely to mark the end of its five-year rebellion.

The insurgents, who once controlled large swathes of the lawless Horn of Africa country, have been turning to guerrilla-style tactics, harrying the country's weak government with suicide bombings and assassinations.

"We moved out our fighters ... from Kismayu at midnight," al Shabaab spokesman, Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, told Reuters on Saturday.

Rage threatened to strike back. "The enemies have not yet entered the town. Let them enter Kismayu which will soon turn into a battlefield," he said.

Locals confirmed the militants had pulled out under the cover of darkness but said the Kenyan troops, fighting under an African Union peacekeeping force's banner, and Somali soldiers were still camped on the city's outskirts.

"NOW WE ARE TERRIFIED"

There were reports of looting in some areas of the city.

"Al Shabaab has not perished, so the worry is what next," said local elder Ali Hussein.

One man who was loudly celebrating the departure of al Shabaab fighters from the city was shot dead by two masked men, residents said.

"These masked men came from behind him and hit him with several bullets right in the head... Now we are terrified, everyone in Kismayu is dumb silent. We are afraid to talk on the phone outdoors," said Halima Nur, a mother of three children.

Al Shabaab, which formally merged with al Qaeda in February, has been steadily losing its footholds under sustained pressure from African Union peacekeeping forces (AMISOM) and Somali government troops for the past year.

The rebel group, which counts foreign al Qaeda-trained fighters among its ranks, is seen as one of the biggest threats to stability in the Horn of Africa. It has received advice from al Qaeda's leadership, counter-terrorism experts say.

Residents said the fighters who had abandoned Kismayu had moved to the jungles that lie between Kismayu and Afmadow as well as to other towns north of the port city like Jamame and Kabsuma.

Kenyan military spokesman Col. Cyrus Oguna said his force was still trying to check whether al Shabaab had withdrawn, and would move into the city if the rebels did not put up resistance.

Al Shabaab has pulled out of a number of urban areas including the capital, Mogadishu, in recent months under pressure from advancing African Union forces. But their continuing guerrilla attacks still pose a big challenge for newly-elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

iPad Mini mockup gets a dramatic showing (video)

Amidst the iPhone 5 release and iOS 6 Maps drama, it?s easy to forget that Apple is also expected to show off the iPad Mini sometime in October. Now we have our closest look yet at what the iPad Mini may look like, thanks to Japanese gadget blog Mac Otakara.

The video below features a mockup of the iPad Mini being shown off to the tune of some dramatic music. In particular, it gives us an idea of the iPad Mini?s scale and size ? rumors say the tablet will sport a 7.85-inch screen. Above, you can see the mockup compared to a 15-inch MacBook Pro.

We first saw some iPad Mini mockup photos right before Apple?s iPhone 5 conference, where the small tablet was first rumored to appear. Now it seems we can expect the iPad Mini in October. Bookmarking service Instapaper also noticed some potential proof of the iPad Mini in its server logs.

At this point, it seems pretty clear that Apple needs to jump into the smaller tablet arena somehow. While the iPad is the undisputed king of 10-inch tablets, Amazon?s Kindle Fire and Google?s Nexus 7 are quickly carving out their presence in the 7-inch arena. Given how much consumers are hot for small and cheap tablets, Apple would be crazy to stay out of this market.

Here Are The Singers Competing In Next Week?s ?American Idol For The Geek Set?

silicon valley voice logoEarlier this month, I wrote about Silicon Valley Voice, a karaoke competition for the tech world hosted by Silicon Valley Bank and Coverflow (a cover band made up of techies including Mayfield Fund's Tim Chang, Facebook's Ethan Beard, and Fandalism's Philip Kaplan). Now, the finalists have been selected, and you don't even have to wait until next week's event to hear them sing. Coverflow member (and Mayfield managing director) Raj Kapoor ?tells me that all of the regular tickets have sold out, with 800 RSVPs. But the organizers convinced Silicon Valley Bank to expand the budget, which means there's room for another 200 people.

Diana Pinckley, communications strategist, civic activist and book ...

Diana Pinckley, a public-relations executive and communications strategist who became active on many fronts after Hurricane Katrina as a community volunteer striving to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, died Wednesday of cancer at her New Orleans home. She was 60.

In post-Katrina New Orleans, she served on a host of recovery-related committees, most notably Women of the Storm, whose members traveled three times to Washington to lobby for help to restore New Orleans levees and, after the BP oil spill, the ravaged Gulf Coast.

"Diana was a connecter, sharing her talents, love and insatiable intellect with everyone and every cause she believed in," said Anne Milling, the organization's founder.

"Thank you for your service to our city and state," U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., wrote to Ms. Pinckley last week, adding that she wished Ms. Pinckley "peace and joy (for) knowing you made a big difference."

A native of Jamestown, Tenn., Ms. Pinckley was an honors graduate of Duke University who came to New Orleans in 1973 to be a staff writer in Tulane's University Relations office. She became its news director and, from 1981 to 1993, its director. In this role, she was the spokeswoman for Tulane's Uptown campus, and she founded Inside Tulane, a campus newsletter.

The office produced publications and news releases, winning national awards for its work, and it coordinated Tulane's sesquicentennial celebration in 1984.

She left Tulane in 1993 to form Pinckley Inc., which helped develop communications strategies for clients such as the Graduate Management Admissions Council, Ohio University, the University of the Pacific, the business schools at Columbia University and Dartmouth College, and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Ms. Pinckley grew up reading mysteries, and she reviewed nearly 350 of them over 23 years for The Times-Picayune in her column, "Get a Clue." She also interviewed authors and was, most recently, Tulane Medicine's editor.

Before Katrina, Ms. Pinckley was already involved in civic organizations, serving on the New Orleans Council for Young Children, which established a school-based health clinic in the Lower 9th Ward, and the Committee of 21, which was formed to get more women elected to public office. She also was chairwoman of the board that runs the Crescent City Farmers Market.

"Helping creative people prosper made Pinckley tick," said Richard McCarthy, the market's executive director. "Scan the landscape of good things happening. In all likelihood, there was Pinckley, leading from behind. She never sought the spotlight, though she deserved it. She found far greater pleasure in helping others with talent and good intentions grow."

After Katrina, Ms. Pinckley's volunteer work moved into high gear. She devoted increasing amounts of her time and energy to organizations that were rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, most notably Women of the Storm.

Ms. Pinckley kept the organization "informed, engaged and enlightened to the ever-changing currents of political platforms that occurred during the rebuilding efforts post-Katrina and, subsequently into the coastal-restoration initiatives," Milling said. "No assignment was ever too much or too great. There will be an unfillable void."

Ms. Pinckley also helped bring back the city's public-library system, and she served on the task force that established the Edible Schoolyard, where Samuel Green Charter School students learn to cultivate vegetables and prepare meals as part of the curriculum. She also was vice president of the board of the Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education, which supports the New Orleans Charter Science & Mathematics High School.

Ms. Pinckley raised money for WWNO-FM and was an active volunteer at WWOZ-FM. She frequently went on the air to raise money for the latter station, which was a major passion of hers because of her devotion to New Orleans music. Whenever Ms. Pinckley did a fundraising broadcast, she always exceeded the goal for her time slot.

One such gig occurred shortly after Women of the Storm's third trip to Washington, where Ms. Pinckley was one of a group chosen to go to Vice President Joe Biden's office to meet with his staff. That didn't faze her, but when she was at WWOZ two days later with a renowned local musician, she couldn't contain her enthusiasm, sending out this text in capital letters: "I'M IN THE STUDIO WITH DAVE BARTHOLOMEW!"

In 2006, CityBusiness named her one of its Women of the Year.

She and her husband, Times-Picayune reporter John Pope, were avid travelers. They rode the Orient Express from Venice to London on their honeymoon, they explored the Galapagos Islands, and they scaled the Great Wall of China and the ruins of Machu Picchu. Her photographs illustrated his Times-Picayune stories of their trips to Scotland, Crete, China and, most recently, a safari in Botswana.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two half-brothers, Guy Pinckley of Allardt, Tenn., and Dr. James Pinckley of Springfield, Mo.; and a half-sister, Patricia Johnson of Knoxville, Tenn.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Howard Library, 915 Andrew Higgins Drive, between Lee Circle and Camp Street. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m.

Knowledge of marketing, housing essential to Real Estate business ...

Terri Hunter

By Kyle Siegel
Staff writer

Terri Hunter is a busy woman. Many around the Sedalia area may know her as a successful real estate agent with Re-Max of Sedalia, but many do not realize that she has several time consuming activities that she is just as passionate about.

Hunter was born at the U.S. Marine Corps bas Camp Pendleton, California.

?I was only there until I was two. My dad was a Marine and we moved around every three to five years,? Hunter said.

She added, ?From there my dad transferred to Memphis, Tennessee. I went to school for a year in Memphis,? Hunter said.

Like most military kids Hunter and family relocated again, this time to Beaufort, South Carolina.

?From there we moved to Sedalia for a year while my dad went to Okinawa. From there we went to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and then my dad retired from the Marine Corps in May of 81. Then we moved here,? Hunter explained.

Hunter ended staying in the Sedalia area and she graduated from Smith-Cotton before moving on to State Fair Community College, where she received an A.A.S. in Accounting.

Hunter was asked if she had a chance to play any sports while moving around so frequently.

?In North Carolina I was the only girl on the baseball team. They didn?t have cheerleaders so I tried to join the football team. They decided to make a cheer leading squad,? Hunter said.

Hunter was asked if she got involved in real estate early on in her work career, or if that was something that came later.

?In real estate I would have liked to have gotten into that earlier, but I thought you had to know a lot of people.

?You really just need to know the marketing and housing,? Hunter explained.

She added, ?I was the office administrator for Re-Max for almost three years. Just seeing the different people that do real estate, I thought I could do that.?

Hunter has been a real estate agent with Re-Max for five years now, and when she first started as an agent in January of 2008 the housing market was in the beginning of its downturn.

?It was a tough year, but it taught me not to get bad habits. You can?t just wait for people to walk in. You have to do the work,? she said.

When asked if she still enjoys the real estate business as much as she did when she started, Hunter replied, ?I do. As a matter of fact I am taking classes for my broker?s license. It is a roller coaster. No two closings are the same.

Not only does she sell real estate, but Terri also trains people for the West Central Association of Realtors.

?I am on the Education and New Member Orientation Board. I train all of the new members that come into the association. I have done that now for three years.

Hunter, ever the busy woman, has also served as the treasurer of the Sedalia Lions Club for nearly two years, and she is also the treasurer for the Sedalia Landlord Association.

Terri and her husband Donnie have two children, both girls. Her daughter Holly is going to college to complete her master?s degree in Speech Pathology. Her daughter Heather is following the footsteps of her mother and taking real estate classes.

Terri and Donnie are also involved in owning and managing properties.

?We have been doing rental houses since 1992. We are just buying more in the last three to five years. It is not too bad. You just want to make sure you have quality properties and maintain good upkeep on them,? Hunter explained.

When asked what she does for fun in her downtime, Hunter gave a surprising answer.

?I have a small hobby farm. It is 40 acres. We have cows. We used to do pigs and chickens, but we don?t have time for that anymore.

?It is very stress relieving. Most of the time the cows don?t talk back. They are always glad to see you,? Hunter said with a smile.

With what little time she has left over in a week, Terri finds time to do a radio show twice a week on BobFM and KIX Country 105.7.

She airs live on Thursday mornings at 8:50 in the a.m. She also airs every other Friday on BobFM. She then pre-records with Becca on Kix Country.

?I always do statistics; Pettis County residential listings, how many are pending and how many are sold each week.?

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? "Beasts of the Southern Wild" director Benh Zeitlin is working on his next film ? a Louisiana-made fable about a hidden ecosystem where the aging process is "out of whack" and people can age quickly or very slowly.

Zeitlin's first film, "Beasts," took awards at the Cannes and Sundance film festivals this year. Zeitlin says he would like to use the same production team and cast in the new, yet-to-be-titled project.

The news comes as Zeitlin prepares to receive the New Orleans Film Society's "Celluloid Hero" award, an honor bestowed to industry standouts who have made significant contributions to the art of making films.

Zeitlin will be recognized Thursday at the society's patron party and gala, the main fundraiser for the New Orleans Film Festival, which is Oct. 11-18.

HBT: Dunn busts out of slump to rescue White Sox

Adam Dunn entered tonight?s action batting .115 (2-for-21) with zero homers and an 8/3 K/BB ratio over his last seven games, but he picked a pretty good time to bust out of his recent slump.

Dunn helped the White Sox snap a five-game losing streak tonight by homering twice in a 5-4 win over the Indians. He had a solo shot to center field off Zach McAllister in the sixth inning and a go-ahead three-run shot to right-center field off Vinnie Pestano with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.

After hitting just .159 with 11 home runs last season in the first year of a four-year, $56 million contract, Dunn has 41 home runs and 94 RBI this season. This is the sixth 40-homer season of his career and his first since 2008.

The Tigers defeated the Royals 6-2 tonight behind ace Justin Verlander, so the White Sox remain one game in front in the American League Central.

Clinton presses Rwanda, DRC leaders on border crisis

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressed the presidents of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to resolve a conflict over rebels in eastern Congo whose military advances have stoked tensions in one of Africa's most volatile regions.

Clinton sat down with Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Congolese President Joseph Kabila in New York on Monday, delivering a firm message to both that steps must be taken to resolve the crisis, a senior U.S. official said on Tuesday.

Clinton's unadvertised meeting, her first joint session with the two feuding African leaders, was aimed at underscoring U.S. concern over the M23 rebel group, which the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the United States and U.N. experts have all said are receiving support from neighboring Rwanda.

"The secretary sent a signal of our concern over what is happening in the region, and the need for both of these leaders to find a way to defuse tensions," said the U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"It is imperative that they take action," the official said.

Clinton's meeting comes ahead of a U.N. meeting on the crisis set for Thursday, one of a series of events taking place alongside the U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York this week.

It also follows a U.S. decision in July to withdraw some $200,000 in military aid for Rwanda, Washington's first direct punitive action against the Rwandans. Several other western European nations have also cut or suspended aid.

Rwanda has denied having any link to eastern Congolese rebels, including the M23 group, who have been fighting Congolese government soldiers in North Kivu province since April, displacing some 470,000 civilians.

A senior U.N. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that faith and trust need to be established between Rwanda and Kabila. He said Kabila had described his confidence in Rwanda as "zero."

While Rwanda has denied any involvement in eastern DRC, the official said that privately: "They are a bit embarrassed, to say the least, and this could be one of the reasons behind the lull (in fighting) in the Kivu."

He said that if Rwanda withdrew support for M23 then the group "could be subdued."

DE FACTO ADMINISTRATION

U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous said this month that rebel forces had established a de facto administration in eastern Congo, challenging the authority of Kabila's government and strengthening their hold over the territory.

A U.N. mission in the DRC, known as MONUSCO, has more than 17,000 troops, but the force is stretched thin across a nation the size of Western Europe and struggles to fulfill its current mandate of protecting civilians.

The U.S. official said Clinton did not explicitly warn Kagame that the further U.S. assistance could be at risk, but said she did emphasize that both leaders bear responsibility for reducing tensions.

"The secretary made no threats," the official said. "But it is important for Rwanda to cease any support for any groups operating against the government of the DRC, and it is important for the DRC government to take steps to protect all of its citizens."

Last month, the DRC said it had asked the U.N. Security Council to place sanctions on Rwanda's defense minister and two top military officials for backing the rebellion, although the United States and other powers are urging more time for political dialogue.

As uneasy neighbors, Congo and Rwanda have gone to war with each other in the past.

Eastern Congo's enduring conflict, which has killed, maimed and displaced several million civilians over nearly two decades, has its roots in Tutsi-Hutu ethnic and political enmities dating back to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Later invasions of Congo by Rwandan forces and Rwanda's backing of Congolese rebels fuelled two crippling wars.

Save Money And Buy More With These Couponing Tips | Eric Chua ...

Coupons can provide multiple benefits. They can save you money at the store immediately. You can then use the savings for other items you desire. In order to start your journey of savings, continue reading this piece.

The obvious place to begin looking for coupons is in your Sunday paper. Manufacturer?s place the majority of their coupons in the Sunday paper inserts. Make it a habit to stock up on as many coupons as you can. Even if you don?t use them now, you can use them later if the need arises.

Pizza Hut Coupon

TIP! Look for coupons on the Internet. The Internet will give you access to many coupon sites where you can download coupons and print them right on your printer at home.

Before buying online, try searching for coupons for a few minutes. A lot of stores offer coupon codes that can save you money on what you are buying. It is easy to search for coupons codes using Google or any other search engine. To locate coupon codes that work you need to search by month and year. For example, if you want to find a Pizza Hut coupon valid for May, 2012, you would search ?Pizza Hut Coupon May 2012?.

Keep your coupons with you at all times. Sometimes people do not remember their coupons when they go shopping, so keep them in plain sight so you will not forget them.

Understand how to best organize your shopping list to take advantage of the money-saving coupons that you have available. For example, if you can buy and item that lasts and that you use often for 50 percent off, then stock up on that item. This can help you save a lot of money.

TIP! A great couponing tip is to buy a lot of the items you normally use when you have a really good coupon. You may not be tempted to purchase in large quantities, but when you think about it, you will save more money by purchasing an item that is on sale.

Look for retailers that accept double coupons. When you double up on a coupon it means you are getting twice as much off that the coupon states. This is useful for expensive items that don?t offer any high value coupons. Check your coupons for words that prevent doubling or other useful options.

Don?t overbuy products you already have enough of at home. You only have so much storage space. If you do not think you can use a coupon in time, or use the product, you should either give the coupon away or simply not use it.

Ask you friends and relative for their unused coupons and offer them your extras. If they shop for items that you usually don?t, assist them. Consider putting together a coupon swap every month. You can use it as a good excuse for a girls? day out too!

TIP! Think about registering your mailing address for more coupons. While you may get junk mail, you will also get valuable coupons.

Trash Bags

Use many coupons on an item if possible. Multiple coupons make it possible to purchase more. You can amass a supply of your commonly used items. For instance, if you find a few different coupons for trash bags, use them at the same time. You will save a lot of money and also have trash bags for the entire year in one trip!

You don?t have to spend a lot of time and money purchasing publications like newspapers if you want to clip out your coupons. Just get your friends and family to help out. Request that those who do not use their coupons pass the Sunday inserts to you. You will get free coupons by doing this. Don?t forget to show appreciation to anyone who helps you. Give them a free item thanks to your coupons or some inexpensive cupcakes that you bake yourself.

TIP! Find a website that will consolidate coupon offers from a variety of sites to get the most coupons. All of the deals you want will be in one big page, and you won?t have to do a lot of hunting.

Even when your shopping trips are planned out according to the coupons you use, you should bring your coupon holder during every shopping trip. Preexisting sales can be made even more worthwhile with the use of coupons

Coupons that you receive at the register are not able to be doubled. It?s smart to see if you have a different coupon that might net you more savings than the one provided to you at the register.

Be sure you don?t purchase an item just because there?s a coupon out there for it. It is simple for people to really waste their money with coupons simply because they buy things that are not really necessary. Just use coupons for products you had been really thinking about buying anyway to prevent investing unnecessary money.

TIP! Sign up for email or register with all of the companies whose products you regularly use. Major corporations you buy many products from, like Stouffers or Procter and Gamble, offer many online coupon opportunities.

Choose your coupons carefully. While you can get some great free stuff and perks, you don?t need to spend money on things you don?t usually buy. Before you go through your coupons, make a list of items that you need to shop for. This makes it easy to avoid spending too much money.

Determine the count size whenever you figure out the size that provides you with the best possible deal. You may have a coupon offering a buck off of a single package of toilet paper. Calculate the unit price of whatever you are purchasing. This will help you decide what the best deal is.

Be respectful and courteous when using coupons. Be sure to purchase the actual items specified on the coupon and that the coupon has not expired. When a good number of couponers do not follow this rule, stores change policies and everyone reduces their potential for savings.

TIP! Set up an email that you use just for newsletters. These newsletters often have manufacturer coupons.

Plan out what coupons you are going to use, as opposed to using every coupon you come across. To get the most out of your savings, wait until the item you want is on sale, and then use the coupon during the sale. Doing so can lower the cost significantly, and you may even get it for free.

Combine your coupons to save more. If you must hold onto a coupon, do so, as this will still hold value. This may also mean that you will need to make more shopping trips, but the money you save will be worth the trouble.

When you?re working to save money with coupons, you really have to avoid brand loyalty. It is not possible to be successful as a couponer if you do so. They only look at the price of the item and how much they can save to determine what they will buy. Staying too loyal to a particular brand can cloud your judgement, costing you potential savings.

TIP! If you really want to get into coupons, consider searching for services online that offer the best coupons for a small fee. There might be some great coupons for stuff you buy available.

When you coupon seriously, you can find two-fold savings. First, you can save money on essentials. But there is a wider world of coupons for restaurants, entertainment and even vacations. To learn how to get started saving today, use the tips from this article.

Snap Judgments: Florida State, Oregon Coming For Alabama's Throne

Snap Judgments is back with looks at Florida State, Oregon, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, LSU, and the SEC.

Sep 23, 2012 - If beating a hated rival's very good team in a primetime game with what was likely the best offensive performance of the year isn't evidence that Florida State is really, truly back, then back is a myth. And even if they're not back, the Seminoles are one thing everyone wants to be: a national title favorite.

Florida State's first half against Clemson went fairly poorly: the Tigers bombed away for a touchdown on their first offensive drive, and scored twice more, on a long, grinding drive and on a short field set up by a muffed punt. Meanwhile, the 'Noles stalled out three times in Clemson territory and watched all-everything kicker Dustin Hopkins miss field goals wide right and wide left. If there was a script for Florida State Fails At Being Back, Part VII, Jimbo Fisher's bunch was following it well up to the point when Clemson took a 28-14 lead early in the third quarter.

From there, FSU went on a 35-3 run that flipped the score to 49-31 in just 16:25 of game clock, dominating in almost every facet of the game. E.J. Manuel found Kelvin Benjamin for one rampaging catch-and-run to set up one touchdown; Lamarcus Joyner's 90-yard kick return set up another; Manuel threw for 63 yards on the next touchdown drive, and completed a perfect fade to Rodney Smith for the score; James Wilder stormed through Clemson's winded defense to set up the fourth TD; and after a fumble broke a string of consecutive touchdown drives, Nick Waisome's interception set the 'Noles up at the Clemson 27, and Chris Thompson took one carry to punch in FSU's final touchdown of the night.

The carnage: Florida State ran 26 offensive plays for 298 yards during that span, averaging an unearthly 11.5 yards per play, eclipsing a second half that was staggering (39 plays, 341 yards, 8.74 yards per play) on its own. That offensive eruption overshadowed the 'Noles defense shutting down Clemson's phenomenal offense (during the run: 20 plays, 28 yards, 1.4 yards per play allowed; during the first half: 39 plays, 253 yards, 6.5 yards per play allowed), and showcased the depth of elite talent at virtually every position that Florida State has, something that should help the 'Noles hang with anyone in the country.

They probably won't need to tap all of that depth at any point between now and their regular-season finale against Florida, either. The toughest game between now and that Thanksgiving week clash is either a Thursday night excursion to Blacksburg to face a Virginia Tech team that has looked mediocre, or a trip to Miami to take on the diminished Hurricanes. The ACC's gap between its top two and the rest of the pack is so big that despite Clemson losing by double digits to Florida State, they're probably good enough that you can expect the Tigers to roll every other conference foe by double digits.

If Florida State can avoid a shocking upset, stay healthy, beat a Florida team it has dominated of late, and get an Oregon loss, these 'Noles should play for a national championship. And of the scant few teams that could challenge Alabama, these Seminoles would be my best bet to roll back the Tide.

Star-divide

While Florida State is the best matchup for Alabama in terms of cloning the Tide, the best contrast has to be Oregon. The Ducks are quick-strike ninjas on both sides of the ball, opportunistic and nettlesome, and got their first conference shutout since 2003 over Arizona on Saturday night in a 49-0 win that doubled as their defense's coming-out party.

Five times, Arizona drove into the red zone; five times, Oregon turned Rich Rodriguez' Wildcats back without points, snuffing out two fourth-and-goal tries from the 4- and the 2-yard lines, blocking a field goal, and intercepting two passes. There's almost no way that any team in the country matches the Ducks' 0-for-5 night on defense in the red zone this year: even New Mexico, the worst team in the red zone in 2011, never went worse than 0-for-2, and the Alabama defense that was the nation's best in the red zone in 2011 never did better than 0-for-2.

Their defense -- which forced five turnovers on the night, allowed just six third-down conversions in 17 tries, and stopped all four Arizona fourth-down tries -- kept the Ducks in the game in the first half as Chip Kelly's offense sputtered, then fueled a 36-point second half by getting two pick-sixes and setting up another two-play drive. Oregon did get to play a slightly less menacing team than Arizona's ranking (itself inflated by a big win over a merely above-average Oklahoma State squad) promised, as Wildcats quarterback Matt Scott missed time with an injury and was hampered when he was in. Still, a goose egg next to the name of a team that was scoring 46 points per contest is impressive nonetheless.

For Oregon to beat a team like Alabama, Florida State, or LSU, it needs luck and turnovers to favor it. But the Ducks seem quite adept at creating luck, and their speed could allow them to blaze to a lead and force an elite team to try to win a shootout with Oregon. That rarely works.

Star-divide

Kansas State's win over Oklahoma in Norman would have been the most impressive win of the night on any other Saturday of this season so far, but the Wildcats' prosaic, grinding excellence took a back seat to Florida State and Oregon last night. In fact, it might not have been the most notable thing about its own game.

K-State ran for 213 yards, came back from two deficits, and forced three Oklahoma turnovers while committing none of its own in a 24-19 win that was its first over the Sooners since the 2003 Big 12 Championship Game. The Wildcats scored twice in the fourth quarter and held off the more talented Sooners, leaving Bill Snyder with yet another massive win that has made him a demigod in Manhattan and "God" on Wikipedia.

But this loss, just like all other Oklahoma losses, ultimately falls on Bob Stoops, who had the misfortune of bringing his Sooners to the mountaintop so early in his head coaching career that a string of 10-win seasons since then has felt disappointing. Stoops is "Big Game Bob" in the derisive sense now, giving the Sooners no better than a coin flip's chance against the best of the best. Since 2003, when the Sooners established themselves as a perennial power with a 12-0 regular season, Oklahoma is 15-17 against teams that would end up winning 10 games. And even in their best years against elite teams, Oklahoma has failed to win the last game of the season (OU was 4-1 against 10-win squads in 2008 before falling to Florida in the BCS National Championship Game, and 4-0 in 2007 before West Virginia's Fiesta Bowl blitz), leaving fans with the same old narrative and another reason to tack Stoops' face on a dartboard.

It's unfair that Oklahoma's loss takes some of the shine away from Snyder's marvelous rebuild of a team that went from improbably great under Snyder to lamentably mediocre under Ron Prince and is back in the vicinity of great under Snyder now. But Oklahoma made itself the big dog of the Big 12 on the field in the 2000s, save that one year Vince Young made Texas unbeatable, and yet the big dog can't gnaw the meat off the juiciest bones. Its bark being worse than its bite will keep getting it all the attention in the world -- even when it ends up in the doghouse.

Star-divide

Notre Dame is used to attention, and the same shadows that Florida State dwelled in during an eternal "IS ________ BACK?" discussion. What no Notre Dame fan and no college football fan of recent vintage is used to is the Irish fielding a shutdown defense. But after allowing nine points to Michigan State and Michigan in two weeks, it appears that's what this year's Notre Dame team has.

Much of the credit for that has to go to Manti Te'o, who has anchored that defense for four years, and been on a journey from execrable (103rd in yards per play allowed and 63rd in scoring defense in 2009) to excellent (21st in yards per play allowed and eighth in scoring defense coming into last night's game in 2012). Te'o keeps adding things to his toolchest, as he proved by picking off two passes in Notre Dame's 13-6 win over Michigan. It helps that he remains a tackling machine, but he's one of many good players now. The Irish have playmakers up front, and 13 takeaways and 14 sacks in four games; this is a legitimately good defense, and its strangulation of the pounding Michigan State offense and dazzling Denard Robinson in the span of two weeks shows that it can win in different ways.

The bad news in South Bend: if the defense is waking up the echoes, the offense is still too far underwater to hear them. Brian Kelly's supposed to be a quarterback whisperer, but he hasn't done much with any of the signal callers he's had. The Irish have gone from laying 50 on Navy in Dublin to scoring 20 against Purdue and Michigan State and 13 against a Michigan team that allowed the same point total to FBS newbie UMass the week prior. That's probably good enough to get the Irish to 5-0 against Miami next week, but Stanford awaits in October.

As for Michigan: Denard Robinson may be worse as a thrower than he was in 2010, and he has not made progress as a playmaker to offset it, but Al Borges appears interested in plugging away at the Sisyphean task of making a 5'10" blur into an NFL-caliber quarterback instead of utilizing his dynamism to win games. Good luck with that.

Star-divide

LSU's trip to Auburn was the undercard on a night of heavyweight bouts in primetime, but the two sets of Tigers played the night's closest game, and the Bayou Bengals flashed some weaknesses against an Auburn team that had no business being in the game against them.

First, LSU coughed up a golden opportunity to take a 7-0 lead on a dominant opening drive with a fumble on a quarterback-center exchange. LSU's defense made up for it with a safety, and their offense matched that drive with another one that actually got into the end zone, but giving away an opportunity like that works against Auburn but would be fatal against Alabama -- heck, it might be fatal against Florida.

Second, LSU was casual with the ball early. Another Zach Mettenberger fumble led to Auburn's first touchdown, and it's not hard to imagine the two fumbles putting LSU in a hole much bigger than the 10-9 one it faced on the plains if committed against a team with a better quarterback than Kiehl Frazier and a better defense than Corey Lemonier And 10 Other Dudes.

But the third and most important thing to take away from the close 12-10 win is that LSU is the member of the college football elite with the biggest identity crisis. The LSU defense is tremendous, and has yet to give up more than 219 yards in 2012, but the offense that was supposed to become great with the addition of Mettenberger is too often no better than adequate. LSU should have run the ball up the middle and through Auburn's doughy gut, but of its nine penalties for 80 yards, six were on the offense, forcing it to pass repeatedly and rely on an unproven group of wide receivers that has yet to produce a go-to guy.

LSU has a date with Florida on Oct. 6 at The Swamp, sure to be rocking for what could be the Gators' announcement of their return to the SEC's top rung. It might want to figure out what it is on offense before hopping on that plane from Baton Rouge.

Star-divide

After all, if LSU isn't sharp, it will lose games in SEC play, as the conference's top five appears to be dangerous. Alabama's the behemoth, still, having allowed 740 yards in four games and coming one passing yard against Michigan short of having three games of 200 yards passing and rushing in 2012, an ideal offensive balance for a No. 1 team that barely has a star to speak of. But the bench is deep: Georgia's 48-3 stomping of Vanderbilt showed the Dawgs firing on all cylinders; South Carolina left Missouri's spread offense in tatters with a 31-10 win that wasn't nearly as close as the score indicated; and Florida did its typical slow-start, sizzling-finish act in a 38-0 shutout of Kentucky.

If you were hoping for a year in which the SEC wouldn't be the epicenter of college football, you're probably going to go wanting again in 2012.
