China's Liu Xiang set for London surgery

Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang will go under the knife in London on Wednesday after a serious Achilles tendon tear put him out of the London Olympics, an official said.

The former 110m hurdles gold medallist, whose heartbreaking injury exit for the second Games in a row drew millions of messages of support, will return to China soon after the operation, he said.

"He will have an operation today," Chinese Olympic committee spokesman Zhang Haifeng told AFP.

"Both Chinese and local doctors examined him yesterday. He's almost broken his right tendon."

Liu clattered into the first hurdle in his heat on Tuesday and fell heavily. After being helped to his feet, he bravely hopped the length of the track and symbolically kissed the last hurdle.

Zhang said the 29-year-old will be treated by a specialist sports surgeon. According to Du Zhaocai of the Chinese Athletics Association, the same doctor has operated on David Beckham.

"He is an expert in sports medicine and has done operations on many famous players like David Beckham," Du told China's official Xinhua news agency.

A specially created Chinese website has drawn 28 millions messages of support for Liu, while a TV commentator sobbed on air as the athlete hobbled out of the Olympic Stadium.

After the dramatic scenes, eerily reminiscent of Liu's withdrawal from Beijing 2008 with an injury to the same tendon, Chinese newspapers splashed with the story.

"The Liu Xiang era is over," said the People's Daily, while the China Daily front page had a photo of Liu with his lips to the hurdle, and the headline, "The Last Kiss".

Zhang said Liu had been resting in the Olympic athletes village since the injury, and was in good spirits when he visited him on Tuesday.

"He's in pain but he's very brave and optimistic," he said. "He's in bed in the athletes village. I visited him yesterday and talked a little bit and gave him some greetings.

"It's really a sad thing but his spirit inspires young people very much."

Liu also had surgery to remove calcium deposits from the tendon in 2008, and embarked on a long, slow recovery process that included remodelling his start technique to take seven strides rather than eight to the first hurdle.

It was not until last year that the one-time world record-holder returned to form, when he beat America's David Oliver in Shanghai. This year he equalled Dayron Robles' current world mark of 12.87sec, aided by wind.

But his coach, Feng Shuyong, said the injury that struck in Beijing had never really gone away, meaning he was always at risk of a serious recurrence.

"The injury is the same one he had in Beijing," Feng said, according to the China Daily. "Over the past several years, he has had good medical care, but it is still there and we never stopped the treatment.

"An Achilles injury is almost impossible to recover from. We tried hard before the Games, but we could not find effective ways (to deal with it)."

Liu shot to stardom at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, when he became China's first male track and field gold medallist. However Feng said no decision had been made on Liu's future.

"He is not thinking about retiring. (But) it is hard to say (if he will return). I hope all the fans can understand this, and that anything can happen," he was quoted as saying.

Syria PM defects, accuses Assad regime of 'genocide'

Syria's prime minister Riad Hijab joined the anti-regime revolt and fled abroad, in what Washington and the opposition hailed on Monday as a major blow to President Bashar al-Assad.

Government forces, meanwhile, were poised to launch an assault on rebels in Aleppo, Syria's commercial capital.

In the highest-ranking defection of the nearly 17-month uprising, Hijab, a leading Sunni Muslim in Assad's minority Alawite-dominated regime, announced he was joining the rebels after slipping across the border into Jordan on Sunday night.

He accused his former master of carrying out "genocide" against his own people but said four decades of Assad family rule were collapsing.

"I announce my defection today from the regime of killing and terror, and I join the ranks of the revolt," Hijab said in statement read by his spokesman Mohammed al-Otri on Al-Jazeera news channel from Amman.

"Syria is passing through the most difficult war crimes, genocide, and barbaric killings and massacres against unarmed citizens," he said.

Hijab's home province of Deir Ezzor in the northeast has been one of the key battlegrounds of the conflict and seen a mounting death toll from operations by the army.

The spokesman said Hijab would leave for Qatar within days, following the example of other high-profile defectors such as Syria's ambassador to Iraq, Nawaf Fares, who switched sides last month.

The latest defection shows Assad has lost control of the country and that his people believe his days are numbered, a US official in Washington told AFP.

The surprise development was "just the latest indication that Assad has lost control of Syria and that the momentum is with the opposition forces and the Syrian people," National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

The Syrian opposition in Jordan said Hijab and his family had slipped over the border during the night accompanied by two government ministers and three army officers.

"The Free Syrian Army helped all of them cross the border... Several other army officers defected and arrived in Jordan last night," said Syrian National Council member Khalid Zein al-Abedin.

SNC leader Abdel Basset Sayda said "this defection shows that the regime is disintegrating. It is the beginning of the end," while the Muslim Brotherhood hailed what it called "a courageous expression of great nationalism."

In Damascus, state television put out a terse report announcing that Hijab had been dismissed. It said Deputy Prime Minister and Local Government Minister Omar Ghalawanji had been appointed caretaker premier.

The 46-year-old Hijab was only appointed on June 6 following a widely boycotted May 7 parliamentary election that was hailed as a centrepiece of reform by the Assad regime but dismissed as a farce by Arab and Western governments.

An agricultural engineer by training, he was agriculture minister under his predecessor Adel Safar who was appointed in April 2011, shortly after the outbreak of the uprising.

Word of his defection came as the Syrian army readied a major ground assault against rebels in the northern city of Aleppo who say they control half of the city of some 2.7 million people.

It also came as a bomb blast rocked Syrian state television headquarters in the heart of Damascus, wounding several people just two days after the army said it had seized the last rebel-held area of the capital.

The morning bombing struck management offices on the third floor of the television building in the heavily protected Omayyad district of the city.

"It is clear that the blast was caused by an explosive device," said Information Minister Omran al-Zoabi. "Several of our colleagues were injured, but there were no serious injuries, and no dead."

In Aleppo, the army bombarded a string of rebel neighbourhoods after government security officials said troops had completed their build-up and that a 20,000-strong force was poised for a ground assault.

A rebel commander was killed in the Salaheddin district in the southwest, and troops shelled the Palace of Justice as well as the Marjeh and Shaar districts, the Observatory said.

At least 10 people were killed in Aleppo on Monday, among them eight civilians, the Britain-based monitoring group said, adding another 27 people died in violence elsewhere across Syria.

In Damascus, deadly clashes broke out in the Sheikh Ibrahim area of Rokn Eddin district, it said.

The head of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria, Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye, on Monday issued an appeal on behalf of civilians, amid fears of a looming bloodbath in Aleppo.

"I urge the parties to protect civilians and respect their obligations under international humanitarian law. Civilians must not be subjected to shelling and use of heavy weapons," he said.

Obama embraces health care law after court ruling

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama, emboldened by the Supreme Court's affirmation of his health care overhaul, is now embracing the law while campaigning for re-election, just as Republican rival Mitt Romney steps back from it.

Obama sees a second chance to sell voters on the issue despite deep skepticism about it from many people. Romney is avoiding answering hard questions about how he would tackle health care, and thus missing the chance to energize voters who oppose the law.

Democrats say the president always planned to stress health care if the court upheld the law. A month after the ruling, he and his team are focused on promoting individual parts of the law that have proved more popular than the sum. The campaign is targeting its efforts on important groups of voters, including women and Hispanics, who, Obama aides say, will benefit greatly once the law takes full effect.

Before the decision, Obama did mention the law in campaign events. But the case he made to voters was hardly vigorous, especially considering the amount of time he dedicated to overhaul during his first year in year in office.

The primary focus of his campaign speeches remains the economy, the race's dominant issue. But the Supreme Court's favorable ruling appears to have freed Obama to speak about the health law more passionately and emphatically than before the case was decided.

His campaign also is running a television advertisement in eight of the most contested states that criticizes Romney for opposing mandatory health insurance coverage for contraception; that provision is in Obama's overhaul. A health care-focused Spanish-language ad is running in Nevada, Colorado and Florida.

"The Supreme Court has spoken," Obama told a cheering crowd at a recent fundraiser in New Orleans. "We are going to implement this law."

During an event near Seattle, Obama said passing the law was "the right thing to do" and he highlighted specific parts of the overhaul that his campaign believes resonate well with voters.

"Young people will be able to stay on their parents' plans till they're 26 years old," Obama said. "Women won't be getting charged more than men, and you'll be getting free preventive care. Seniors will see the cost of their prescription drugs go down. If you don't have health insurance we're going to help you get it."

His campaign has been aggressive in selling the health overhaul to women.

During a speech to female bloggers Thursday, the president said he's "not going to give any ground to those who would deny women their own health care choices."

Romney, who declared the overhaul a "bad law" after the court ruled, has become less aggressive and less expansive in his discussion of health care.

At some recent events, Romney hasn't talked about the issue at all. On Friday, while campaigning in Las Vegas, he made one brief mention of "Obamacare", pledging to get rid of it and return health care "to a setting of personal responsibility."

Romney hasn't featured health care prominently in any television ads since the ruling June 28, but has made a few high-profile comments. The Republican was booed repeatedly during a July speech to the NAACP when he pledged to repeal the law if elected.

He "has and will continue to discuss the president's failures on health care," Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said, adding that the candidate "will deliver a new direction and will take action to repeal and replace Obamacare."

In a deadlocked race, Romney is hampered by his support for a health care measure similar to Obama's while he was Massachusetts governor. Also, Romney's calls for repeal raise complex questions about what he would do in place of the law; those are questions Romney has struggled to answer.

For Obama, there's a political risk in fully embracing his health care overhaul because the law remains unpopular with many.

An ABC News/Washington Post poll conducted in early July showed 47 percent of Americans supporting the law and 47 percent opposing it.

Yet the Obama campaign has been heartened by polls suggesting many people are ready to put the health care debate behind them.

For example, 56 percent of those questioned said they wanted to see the law's critics move on to other issues and stop their efforts to block the law from taking effect, according to a poll in early July by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Half of independent voters were among those who wanted to see lawmakers move on to other issues.

"Tens of millions of Americans are already reaping the benefits of health reform, and, now that the court has ruled, want to turn the page from the partisan fights of the last two years over its repeal," said Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager.

The way Obama and Romney have approached health care following the Supreme Court ruling isn't necessarily trickling down to state and local elections. For some Democrats, particularly those in more moderate or conservative districts, supporting the president's health care overhaul remains a significant electoral liability. For some Republicans, especially those in the House, running to repeal the law can be a guaranteed way to energize supporters.

Business Ethics of Today | Reputational Compliance

In an era in which the very meaning of financial responsibility is shifting, the core components of business ethics must be understood in a different context. The division between how individuals and companies behave in the marketplace has widened, both in terms of conduct and technology. Never before has it been more important to project an image of integrity as a business or been more critical to leverage the technologies that can accomplish this goal.

The Growing Divide
Until somewhat recently, good business ethics meant that a company?s behavior was very similar to that on an individual. This included dealing fairly with others, negotiating in good faith and incurring debt that the borrower believed was manageable. Since the financial meltdown of 2008, personal views of debt have shifted dramatically. The stigma once associated with defaulting on a debt is no longer present and individuals are no longer hesitant to declare bankruptcy.

Against this backdrop, the public is even more critical of the business practices of companies, particularly those that operate in the realm of finance. This has become so fundamental, that many large corporations have begun advertising campaigns that center on integrity and reliability. Under this new paradigm, a company is held to a higher standard of ethics even while individuals are following lower standards.

Perception is Critical
It has always been the case that the appearance of impropriety could be as damaging as the reality. Under modern business ethics this has never been more true and difficult to manage. With the rise of social media and instant communication, negative images can spread very quickly. It has become a necessity to have an active presence on the most popular social networking sites, not only to promote one?s business, but to control the potential of negative publicity.

A result of the shift in business ethic?s trends is that more technology is dedicated to efficient management and administration. Solutions like Lexis Nexis receivables management are aiding companies in ensuring that they are both paying debt and collecting receipts smoothly. For many customers of a business, the procedures used in the collection of receipts can create a deeply held view of that business. Being accurate is no longer sufficient.

As the very meaning of business ethics continues to shift in the always-changing economic landscape, a business must adapt to meet new trends. Using technology and understanding what is at stake is critical. Only with an updated approach can a company ensure that it gives itself the best chance for success.

Dedication to self improvement and personal growth may well be the deciding aspect in just how your current long term future will turn out.

ANYONE FOR ENNIS?

This wasn't a competition. It was a coronation.

With a healthy lead in the heptathlon, Britain's Olympic poster girl Jessica Ennis could almost have walked around the final event, the 800 meters. But the roars of 80,000 fans carried her over the line in first place.

As she headed around the second and last lap, the Olympic Stadium announcer implored the crowd to make more noise. And, somehow, they did. And they carried her over the line in first place.

I've been in some noisy stadiums in my time (vuvuzelas in South Africa, anybody?) but this felt ? I could physically feel the roar ? like the loudest by far.

___

HE DELIVERED, SHE DIDN'T

Britain's Mo Farah couldn't contain his excitement as he won the 10,000 meters gold medal. But his wife Tania, seven months pregnant, was desperately trying to keep her emotions in check.

The Somali-born Farah embraced his wife, and their young daughter on the track after his Olympic winning run. Tania had earlier joked that being at the stadium at all was probably a risk. The raucous atmosphere, she suggested, could send her into labor early.

She said she'd even checked that there would be doctors on hand at the stadium. Just in case.

THE CROWD LIFTS

"If it wasn't for the crowd I don't think that would happen. They give you that lift, that boost. A lot of people thought having the Olympics in London was a lot of pressure. Obviously there is pressure, but sometimes you can't think about it. You've just got to use the crowd. I think every single one of us who won a gold medal used the crowd." ? MORE GOLD FOR FRASER-PRYCE

A milestone for Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce arrived as a milestone passed for her country.

"I want to tell Jamaica: Happy 50th anniversary," said Fraser-Pryce, fresh from her second consecutive gold medal for the women's 100 meters Saturday night. This weekend marks 50 years since the country became independent from Britain.

Fraser-Pryce closed ground over the last 20 meters and leaning at the line to win in 10.75 seconds and edge American Carmelita Jeter by .03 seconds. Another Jamaican, Veronica Campbell-Brown, finished third for her second career 100-meter bronze.

When the scoreboard finally flashed her in the No. 1 position, Fraser-Pryce dropped to the ground and cried. She ran to the stands, grabbed a Jamaican flag and paraded around with her teammate, Campbell-Brown, known as "VCB" on the island. She's not finished in London yet, either. VCB is the two-time defending champion in the 200, where she'll have Fraser-Pryce to contend with again, along with American Allyson Felix.

FOR AURORA

Missy Franklin's breakout performance in the London Games has given the grief-stricken town of Aurora, Colo., a whole lot to smile about. Franklin capped a brilliant Olympic debut with a gold medal in the 4x100 individual medley relay on Saturday night, giving her four gold medals and a bronze.

"I hope this means a lot to them," Franklin says. "I have constantly been thinking about them throughout this whole time. Everything I did here is dedicated to them."

Franklin is from the Denver suburb of Centennial and goes to high school in Aurora, where a mass shooting in a movie theater on July 20 shook the town to its core.

"It was so, so terrible what happened and it's still hard to believe it really did happen," Franklin says. "I hope that I was able to bring some smiles back to Colorado. The supportive tweets and Facebook posts I've been getting, so many people have been saying that I've been doing that. That just means the world to me."

AT THE GATES

Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, stopped by Horse Guards Parade on Saturday night to watch Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings dismantle the Netherlands in straight sets in beach volleyball.

Here's a picture of them waiting for journalists to finish up with the two-time gold medalists in the mix zone: http://goo.gl/tVcuy. (No, he's not behind protective glass. He's out in the open air, behind the announcer's table. The picture was taken from inside a control booth ? through, well, windows.)

Asked what he thought of the Americans' performance, Gates told The Associated Press: "It was fantastic."

Gates is a bit of a beach volleyball groupie, it turns out. He says he went to see matches "at Bondi and Beijing." May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings won the gold medal in 2008 in Beijing but were not a team at the Sydney Games, when the competition was held at Bondi Beach. (They won their first at Athens in '04.)

MURDOCH'S POOLSIDE VISIT

Britain's Culture Secretary is in some hot water over a poolside visit with media tycoon Rupert Murdoch.

Jeremy Hunt, the most senior minister responsible for the Olympics, was seen chatting with Murdoch at the Olympic Aquatics Center on Friday night. Both were guests of London mayor Boris Johnson, just a few months after Hunt faced tough questions at the country's media ethics inquiry over his links to the mogul.

In May, Hunt had told Britain's judge-led inquiry into press standards ? which is scrutinizing links between the press and politicians ? that he regretted developing friendly ties to Murdoch's son James.

Opposition Labour Party lawmaker John Mann says the two of them watching together while American Michael Phelps won the gold in the 100-meter butterfly was inappropriate. Hunt, Mann says, should be avoiding Murdoch "like the plague."

Hunt's office insists, though: The minister didn't arrange in advance to meet with Murdoch.

ENNIS' GOLD

She grinned, blew kisses, and jumped up and down. Then Jessica Ennis leaned in for her gold medal, grinning ear to ear as the crowd roared and the music played ? "God Save the Queen."

Before the medal ceremony, Ennis said of how she felt: "Massive relief. To come into this event with all that pressure with everyone just saying 'Oh, you are going to win gold. You are going to win gold.' I know how hard it has been to win it. Yeah, I just can't believe I've done it. All that pressure is off me now. It's so nice."

THEY ROAR FOR MO

Olympic Stadium is roaring for Mo Farah, and for the rest of his family.

The British distance runner turned on the jets on the final lap to run away with the men's 10,000 meters on Saturday night. Farah collapsed to the track in tears, then made the shape of a heart to tell 80,000 adoring fans that the feeling was mutual.

Minutes later, Farah's wife and stepdaughter met him on the track, and he scooped up his little girl in a warm embrace.

The family posed for pictures as the cheers continued, a family portrait that will be difficult to top.

PARTING GIFT

One last ovation, one last trophy, one last ceremony for Michael Phelps.

PHELPS' LAST PODIUM

First he climbed out of the Olympic pool. For the last time. Now, with tears in his eyes and his teammates by his side, Michael Phelps has stepped to the top of the Olympic podium one more time. For the last time.

Phelps hopped up on the podium with teammates Nathan Adrian, Brendan Hansen and Matt Grevers, then clasped hands and raised their arms in celebration of their 4x100 medley relay gold medals.

It's the 18th gold medal for Phelps, who is calling it an Olympic career. He smiled while holding back tears as "The Star Spangled Banner" played at the Aquatic Center. Then he posed with the medal and an American flag before taking one last victory lap.

He tossed his flowers up to his mother, who dropped them on the first try. It's about the only thing that has gone wrong for Phelps on his final night at the pool.

GLITTER FACE

American sprinter DeeDee Trotter took her game face to another level Saturday night.

She plans to raise the bar in Sunday's 400-meter final.

"There's an explosion on my face," she says. "Tomorrow I am bringing it bigger, better."

Trotter paints patriotic designs next to her right eye before she competes. In Saturday's semifinals she had a burst of red, white and blue and said it makes her tougher.

"I keep saying it's like that Mike Tyson-type thing. You know when he came back with the tat, he was crazy, crazy maniac," Trotter says. "He just got in there and did whatever it took, and that's the attitude I'm tying to bring tomorrow. My glitter face just showed that: war paint time, time to get the grind on."

PHELPS: ENDING IN STYLE

Michael Phelps definitely earned the last gold medal of his incredible Olympic career.

Team USA trailed after two legs in the 4x100 medley relay on Saturday, but Phelps put them back in front and Nathan Adrian blew away the rest of the field as the anchor in the freestyle leg to give the Americans their 30th swimming medal of the London Games. Matt Grevers and Brendan Hansen rounded out the relay squad.

Phelps was stone-faced as he walked into the pool for the final race of his career. He needed every bit of that focus to chase down Japan, which was leading the relay after two legs.

That's 22 medals, 18 of them gold for Phelps in his career. Soon he'll be stepping on the Olympic podium for the final time.

SWIMMING DOMINATION

Missy Franklin and her Team USA swimming pals are hugging and smiling as they walk out of the pool. They sure have this whole celebration thing down pat.

Franklin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer and Allison Schmitt set a new world record of 3:52.05 in the 4x100 medley relay on Saturday night, beating rival Australia by nearly two seconds.

The Americans have dominated in the pool in these Olympics, racking up 29 medals so far. That's as many as any other three nations combined.

The four stars embraced after their record swim, laughing and raising their arms in another victory. There was never any doubt in this race, as the Americans jumped out to a big lead early and blazed to a convincing victory.

AT&T to goes on spectrum shopping binge

NEW YORK (AP) ? AT&T Inc. has gone on a shopping spree for wireless spectrum, striking three separate deals that should let it increase its capacity for wireless broadband.

The Dallas-based phone company said Thursday that it has agreed to buy NextWave Wireless Inc., a troubled company that's mainly a holder of spectrum rights, for $600 million in cash, most of which will go toward paying off NextWave debt.

AT&T also revealed Thursday that it has agreed to buy spectrum from Comcast Corp., the cable company, and Horizon Wi-Com, a small Miami-based company that tried to start up its own wireless broadband network. In those cases, the company didn't reveal what it was paying.

Comcast has given up on its own plans to start a wireless network, and is selling most of its spectrum to Verizon Wireless.

Analyst John Hodulik at UBS said he expects that AT&T is paying a total of less than $1 billion for the three deals.

The three deals all involved spectrum in one particular band. Put together, they would provide near-nationwide coverage and a substantial boost to AT&T's capacity. AT&T said it will begin to deploy the spectrum in three years.

However, the radio bands lie close to frequencies that are used for satellite communications, and interference concerns have prevented them from being used. AT&T has asked the Federal Communications Commission to approve a solution that it says would prevent interference.

AT&T has been on the hunt for more wireless spectrum, a hunt that led it to agree to buy T-Mobile USA last year for $39 billion. That deal fell through on antitrust grounds.

The $600 million for NextWave includes $25 million for its shares, and an additional $25 million if certain conditions are met. That sent the shares, which trade over the counter, jumping from 25 cents at Wednesday's close to $1.29 Thursday.

The deal doesn't include all of NextWave's spectrum. Some Canadian and U.S. holdings will be placed into a new holding company, to be owned by its debtholders.

In its latest regulatory filing, NextWave listed the value of its spectrum holdings at $434 million and its debt at $1.1 billion.

San Diego-based NextWave has had a difficult life. It was spun out from Qualcomm Inc. in 1995. The next year, it bid $4.74 billion to buy the rights to 95 spectrum licenses from the government, big enough to cover nearly 94 million people. But the company couldn't make its payments and filed for bankruptcy protection.

The FCC took back and re-auctioned the licenses, but NextWave argued that bankruptcy law protected it from seizure of its assets. It took the fight all the way to the Supreme Court, which sided with it. The company emerged from bankruptcy in 2005, a year after it reached a settlement with the FCC.

NextWave sold some of the licenses from the 1996 auction to Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc., and MetroPCS Communications Inc. It returned others to the FCC.

NextWave's current spectrum holdings derive from another FCC auction in 2005 and from acquisitions from other companies. It spent $500 million on the license, it said in 2008. It was then also developing wireless network equipment, but those operations have folded or been sold off since then. The shares were delisted from the Nasdaq in 2010 because they failed to meet the minimum $1 value.

Team GB jump to third in medals table

Great Britain jumped to third in the Olympic medals table on Saturday with double gold in the rowing tournament at Eton Dorney.

Going into the afternoon's event, Britain's 10 gold medals represented the highest number of victories of any country except table toppers the United States with 21 and mighty China with 20.

Team GB were fourth overnight but leapt above South Korea, who remained on nine gold medals.

Britain won a fourth successive Olympic men's four title at the rowing regatta as the home crew -- Alex Gregory, Pete Reed, Tom James and Andrew Triggs Hodge -- led from the first stroke to deny arch rivals Australia, with the United States taking bronze.

Britain had also won the men's four title in Sydney, Athens and in Beijing.

Then Katherine Copeland and Sophie Hosking won GB's first ever lightweight women's double sculls Olympic gold. Clear water separated the winners from China, with world champions Greece in third place.

Britain came within a whisker of a third gold medal on the final day of the rowing events as defending Olympic champions Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter led for most of the 2000 metres of the lightweight men's double sculls.

But Denmark's Mads Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist overhauled the UK duo on the last five metres to push Purchase and Hunter down to siliver medal position. New Zealand claimed bronze.

This was sweet revenge for the Danes who had lined up in Beijing four years ago as favourites only to have to settle for third behind the British duo. There was drama on Saturday when the race had to be restarted after a seat broke on the British boat in the first 100m.

Team GB has a strong chance of more golds later in the day, when Jessica Ennis will complete her two-day heptathlon challenge and Mo Farah will be one of the favourites in the men's 10,000.

Ancient records shed light on Italian earthquakes (Aquila area)

ScienceDaily (Aug. 3, 2012) ? When a damaging earthquake struck the area of L'Aquila in central Italy in 2009, it was the latest in the region's long history of strong and persistent quakes. The rich recorded history of settlement in the area, along with oral traditions, archaeological excavations, inscriptions and medieval texts, and offer insight into how often the region might expect destructive earthquakes.

But according to a new study by Emanuela Guidoboni and colleagues, the historical record on ancient and medieval earthquakes comes with its own shortcomings that must be addressed before the seismic history of L'Aquila can be useful in assessing the current seismic hazard in this area.

To illustrate some of these potential gaps in knowledge, the researchers combed through written records and information from archaeological excavations, covering the period from ancient Roman occupation in the first century A.D. to the late Middle Ages of the 15th century A.D. The authors say, researchers must piece together information ranging from collapsed roofs within an ancient Roman city, to the evidences of rebuilding damaged baths and cisterns. In later years, better written records offer more detail on the specific location and size of earthquakes occurring in 1349, 1456, and 1461 (a long seismic sequence).

The authors say that the early to middle Middle Ages, in particular, have a dearth of information that needs to be addressed to have a more complete picture of the region's seismic history. Overall, the records confirm that the region appears to have been host to a high number of strong earthquakes. The authors also point out a tendency in the area to produce multiple and nearly simultaneous seismic events that vary considerably in their impact.

As Guidoboni and her colleagues note, the earthquakes have had a strong influence in the region's economy and culture. It is a impact that can be seen clearly in the historical records, such as a written account of a large earthquake in 1315. During that quake, warring factions in the town came together after they "were struck with fear at the strong shaking when a frightening earthquake soon afterwards struck that place in a terrible way," the official account says, "and they abandoned their wrongdoing and returned to the narrow path of their conscience."
