Pro-EU Tadic leading polls ahead of runoff vote

(AP) ? Serbs seem poised this weekend to re-elect a reformist who arrested Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic, rejecting a nationalist promising closer ties with Russia ? in a sign that the troubled Balkan nation is edging away from its 1990s war legacy.

Boris Tadic, who championed Serbia's bid to become a member of the European Union, was leading the polls against former right-wing extremist Tomislav Nikolic, days ahead of the key presidential runoff on Sunday.

Tadic was half a percent ahead of Nikolic in the first round of voting on May 6, while Nikolic's Progressive Party won the most votes for parliament. Nationalists claimed the vote was rigged ? a charge that is fueling fears of possible violence in the runoff.

The outcome is critical for Serbia's hopes of moving toward EU membership and shaking off its image as an international pariah from the 1990s' Balkans wars under late strongman Slobodan Milosevic.

Tadic led Serbia's EU bid when it became a candidate for entry in March, following the long-awaited arrest of Mladic and former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic. His government turned the two over to a U.N. tribunal in the Netherlands to face genocide charges for their role in the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

Both Mladic and Karadzic had long been untouchable as heroes to Serbia's nationalists ? including Nikolic ? who organized violent protests against Karadzic's arrest in 2008. Tadic handed over Mladic last year, after police tracked him down to a cousin's house north of Belgrade. The former general is accused of orchestrating the slaughter of 8,000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica, Europe's worst massacre since World War II.

A year later, it appears that Serbia has moved on.

As Mladic's genocide trial started in the Hague tribunal this week, it caused no stir in Serbia, with media only carrying brief reports from the courtroom. Mladic was largely ignored in campaigning by the presidential candidates, who focused on economic problems instead.

"That (war crimes) is no longer a topic," said Natasa Kandic, a leading human rights activist in Serbia. She added that "Mladic was the topic when Serbia was under pressure to arrest him."

Tadic has built his presidential bid around his pro-EU policies, but his biggest problem remains the economic downturn and corruption within the ruling elite. Faced with the global financial crisis, which slowed down much needed foreign investments, Tadic's government has seen massive job losses and plummeting living standards.

Nikolic, who narrowly lost two earlier presidential votes against Tadic, claims to have shifted from being staunchly anti-Western to pro-EU, and says that he wants Serbia both "in the West and the East." Nikolic has close ties with Russia and has even in the past envisaged Serbia as a Russian province.

Nikolic's populism has struck a chord with voters, who warmed to his criticism of widespread social injustice and corruption in Serbia and promises of jobs, financial security and billions of dollars in foreign investment.

A pre-election survey by Ipsos Strategic Marketing agency published last week, gave Tadic 52 percent over Nikolic's 48. Tadic's camp is also likely to form the next government together with third-placed Socialists ? once-Milosevic's party ? which has allied with Tadic.

Tensions soared last week when Nikolic accused Tadic's camp of election fraud during the general vote on May 6. He alleged that reformists had printed extra ballots and tampered with voters' lists to rob him of half a million votes ? a claim dismissed by both the election authorities and the state prosecutor.

If he wins, Tadic will have a chance to push forward Serbia's EU bid and try to win a date for opening accession talks. The new government also must introduce painful economic reform and move to root out corruption in order to move closer to EU membership.

Tadic has also overseen a more conciliatory stance toward Serbia's neighbors and former Balkan war foes, including Kosovo, the former province which split in 2008.

Nikolic has said he would abandon the EU plan if it means that Serbia must give up the claim on Kosovo, and he has forged an alliance with the staunchly anti-EU party of former premier Vojislav Kostunica.

In a pre-election debate on Wednesday, Nikolic urged voters to "punish Tadic for unfulfilled promises."

"Sunday is our last chance for change!" he said on state television.

Tadic called for stability so that Serbia can move forward in its EU bid. He accused Nikolic of fueling instability and possible violence with his allegations of vote rigging.

"May 20 will be a referendum over which way Serbia will take, whether it will go straight to the EU or take a turn or two," Tadic said. "I believe that the only way forward for Serbia is toward the European Union."

The Starting Point for Self Improvement - The Network of Useful ...

Rocket science is not required in self improvement and development. It just requires simple steps to see positive results in your life when you are set to make positive changes in the way you perceive yourself.

Your first step to improving yourself is to visit with someone you can trust to talk about what you?d like to do. However, remember to listen to what they say when you consult them on how to go about improving your life. Keep in mind that your friend may also be searching for some good feedback to help them too.

Ask these questions:

Do I spend too much time arguing?

Am I ill-mannered?

Do I prevent others from getting a word in?

Am I smelly?

Do I bore you?

This type of question is sure to demonstrate to your friend that you are serious about learning self improvement efforts. Plan ahead not to be offended when your friend tells it like it is. Your friend may have be pleased with a chance to assist you in seeing yourself as you really are. They might even tell you that you are pretty good the way you are.

The simple act of asking the appropriate questions you will be letting your trusted friend see that you are really interested in improving yourself. Here, they are more likely than not to help you figure out your efforts. Listen to what they are telling you, and don?t make negative statements that send incorrect message. Statements such as, ?That is just who I am!? or ?You said too much? will send a wrong message that you may not be ready to change.

More tips:

Set aside negative thoughts when it looking at self improvement. Think positive thoughts about yourself. This will build yourself up rather than beating you down which is tremendously helpful as you try to improve.

Understand that beauty comes from the inside even when the outward appearance may be something less attractive. Outer beauty fades from view, but inner beauty is a lifelong experience.

Do not down and dirty as some may do, do what you must to pick them up and out of their circumstances. Doing so will have you feeling more content with yourself and increasing your self improvement efforts.

Mistakes should not pull you under. Take them to be teachable moments and learn from the experience. There?s not a anyone that doesn?t make mistakes, however, they should not be allowed to bring us to a point of giving up attempting to improve ourselves.

Live life one step at a time. That is what setting up goals is all about. Decide what you want and go after it with small steps. Improving yourself takes place with consistent forward motion.

Make up your mind to set measurable and achievable goals for you. Your goals will point you to achieving your purposes. Everything important takes time to achieve and it?s the same with self improvement.

Do things for others the way you?d like them to treat you. This is an old adage, but it remains true today and when you practice these principles you will be headed toward self improvement. Little things mean a lot to most people, and that pays rich rewards when it comes to your self esteem.

While you may be headed toward self improvement, friends may not be up to the task. It could be that they don?t recognize that they can get something from self improvement. This should not prevent you from getting involved in self improvement exercises. Once they see the results at self improvement, they may decide to do the same.

No, perfection is not what you are after. No one is able to get there. What must be said though is that you should try.. You may be considering taking that beginning step. If so, get up and get going?

Obama, Hollande hunt for Afghanistan compromise

Hollande and Obama (Pablo Martinez Monsivais/AP)

Visiting French President Fran?ois Hollande told President Barack Obama on Friday that France's combat troops would leave Afghanistan by year's end and pledged to find a way "for our allies to pursue their mission" in talks at a looming NATO summit. The two leaders also bonded over jokes about fast food, a move that recalled ugly Franco-American tensions ahead of the war in Iraq.

France will support Afghanistan "in another way, another form" Hollande told Obama as they met for the first time in the Oval Office. But "the date of the end of 2012 is, for (French) combat troops, the final date."

Obama's NATO-backed strategy for ending the deeply unpopular war calls for shifting the burden of security to Afghan forces next year (a step the NATO summit in Chicago this weekend is expected to detail) on the way to a full withdrawal of alliance combat troops by the end of 2014. At the same time, he recently signed an accord with Afghan President Hamid Karzai that may keep American military trainers and counterterrorism troops in the war-torn country to 2024. U.S. officials have expressed hope that France will consider a similar compromise, which could avert a possible rush to the exits by other war-weary allies.

"We'll discuss this again at the summit in Chicago, and I think that we'll be able to find a way to make it possible for our allies to pursue their mission and for France to keep the promise I made to the French people," said Hollande, who campaigned on a pledge to pull France's combat troops out by the end of the year.

"We agreed that even as we transition out of a combat phase in Afghanistan that it's important that we sustain our commitment to helping Afghans build security and continue down the path of development," said Obama.

Obama and his guest, the first Socialist French president in 17 years, seemed far closer on other issues: Both cited the need to stimulate the sputtering global economy. "Growth must be a priority, even as we get our public accounts in order," said Hollande, whose calls for jobs initiatives is a break from predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy's austerity agenda. Obama and the French president were to meet hours later at Camp David with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has called for stricter fiscal discipline, at a summit of the Group of Eight industrialized nations.

"We're looking forward to a fruitful discussion later this evening and tomorrow with the other G8 leaders about how we can manage a responsible approach to fiscal consolidation that is coupled with a strong growth agenda," said Obama.

The French president also said he and his host had agreed on the need for Greece to remain in the eurozone?Europe's common currency area?despite the country's profound debt crisis and calls from some quarters for dropping it from the 17-nation economic union.

"We share the same belief, that Greece must remain in the eurozone and that all of us must make an effort to achieve that goal," said Hollande. "And I wanted to send the Greek people this message: Your place is in the eurozone."

Both leaders also showed a united front on the tense diplomatic crisis over Iran's suspect nuclear program and international efforts to end Syria's bloody crackdown on opposition to President Bashar al-Assad.

Obama's talks with Hollande kicked off a frenetic four days of guns-and-butter diplomacy, starting with the G8 meeting at Camp David and continuing through the NATO summit in Chicago.

Both Afghanistan and the economy are central to Obama's legacy?not to mention his hopes for re-election in November. And the back-to-back summits offer vital opportunities to get the United States and its closest allies in closer harmony.

White House officials have worriedly watched Europe's debt crisis, concerned that a recession there could infect the already-weak American economy. And the president has made a successful handover of security responsibility from NATO-led forces to their Afghan counterparts by the end of 2014 one of his signature foreign policy goals.

"Our economies are interdependent. What happens in Europe has consequences on the United States. And what happened in the United States had consequences for Europe," said Hollande. "The more coordinated our actions, the more effective we can be."

(Hollande later doubled down on his Afghanistan policy in a press conference before the G8, telling reporters his withdrawal pledge was "not negotiable," Agence France-Presse reported.

"The withdrawal of combat forces is France's decision and this decision will be implemented," he said. But he noted that France would "make its decisions in harmony with its allies, including our American partners."

After 2012, any remaining French forces "will simply be tasked with logistics to bring home our equipment" and will take part in efforts to train the Afghan police and army.)

As the meeting began, Obama referred to Hollande's youthful adventures in the United States, which he traveled in 1974 on a grant from a business school. The future president of a country famed for its food studied McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken, both unknown at the time in France. "I could have made a fortune in cheeseburgers, but I finally chose politics," he recently told The New York Times.

After offering Hollande a "hearty congratulations" on his election victory, Obama noted that his guest "actually spent some time in the United States in his youth, studying American fast food?and although he decided to go into politics, we'll be interested in his opinions of cheeseburgers in Chicago."

"I want to thank President Obama for his vast knowledge of my life before I became a politician. And I want to say nothing that might suggest that cheeseburgers might have any flaws," replied Hollande.

"I just want to remember that cheeseburgers go very well with french fries," joked Obama. "No declaration about french fries," Hollande said, in English.

That light banter recalled deep tensions between Paris and Washington in the run-up to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, a war France fiercely opposed. U.S. lawmakers at one time voted to change the name of french fries to "freedom fries" in their cafeteria, while Air Force One served "freedom toast." Neither food is known as "French" in France.

5 Steps To Becoming Your Own Weight Loss Boss

Since I?m entrenched in the fitness industry, I come across a lot of Diet and Fitness books. Frankly, when I saw the new book, ?Weight Loss Boss? by David Kirchhoff, President and CEO of Weight Watchers, I didn?t know what to expect! Yet surprisingly, it really struck a chord: It?s a refreshing, authentic look at the struggle of losing weight and maintaining it by the head of one of the most successful weight loss brands in the world.
What I love about this book is that he doesn?t speak as a CHIEF EXECUTIVE from his lofty perch in an ivory tower, but as a regular guy who has had his own lifelong struggle with weight and learned valuable lessons along the way. The truth is, whether you?re a world traveling CEO or a stay-at-home Mommy blogger, everyone struggles with similar food and weight issues. Kirchhoff?s advice and tips are realistic, relatable, practical for everyone, and they pave the way for a sustainable, healthy lifestyle ? the kind of lifestyle I advocate for in everything I do. Here are 5 steps he talks about that you can use to set yourself up for your own success:

1. Willpower is overrated

When you rely on willpower alone you set yourself up to fail. Routine will win out over willpower 99% of the time and this is why diets don?t work. They rely on short-term changes that no one can keep up! If you plan your everyday routine around exercise, nutritional meals, and reaching realistic goals, you set yourself up for success.

2. Create Good Habits

A good habit doesn?t require willpower or discipline. By definition, a habit is something you don?t think about much, it?s automatic. With a bad habit you probably don?t think about it until you suffer the repercussions. Kirchhoff outlines the Formula for Behavioral Change created by B.J Fogg, a professor at Stanford. If there?s a habit you?re trying to shed, you need to be motivated to lose it. You need a reward (not food!) to make it worthwhile; you need the steps to get rid of it in the simplest way possible which is the ability. Finally, you need a trigger. This can be anything from a personal trainer, best friend who will remind you, or even an alarm clock to get you going. It takes 4-6 weeks to internalize that trigger mechanism and establish a habit, and now is the best time to start!

3. Managing your Environment

Kirchhoff says, ?Out of sight, out of mouth? and don?t bring it in to your house or your office. Make the better alternatives for yourself easily accessible, and learn to predict what David calls ?hot states? and ?cold states.? Hot states are when you?re tossed into a situation where temptation is all around you, like a buffet at a busy conference that is filled with foods out of your normal routine that will kill your calorie budget and make you feel horrible afterwards. The best way to deal with these situations is with a plan when you are in a cold state, before temptations present themselves. Most of the time you can predict your ?hot states? ? our brains can get us in trouble with cravings, but they can also help us behave. The longer you?ve been practicing your routine, the less you?ll be prone to give in to a hot state situation.

4. Build a Support Network

We tend to think that we?re the only ones who are having a hard time, and everyone else eats well and exercises without any effort. This couldn?t be further from the truth! Opening up about your experience helps to hold you accountable for your actions. Before writing Weight Loss Boss, Kirchhoff started a blog called ?Man Meets Scale? to share his struggles and triumphs with weight maintenance. He found that men and women opened up, and found encouragement to keep going and keep sharing. The more people who know about your goals and struggles, the more people are able to help and support you in your journey.

5. It?s about Food Exercise

It?s one thing to lose the weight, but how do you keep it off for the rest of your life? He talks a lot about maintenance: Staying focused, continuously setting new goals and being accountable are the keys to maintaining weight loss. It?s a sobering truth that if you struggle with weight, you will always struggle with weight, but that doesn?t mean you?re doomed to live a life without enjoying food! The best thing you can do for your relationship with food is to love food that loves you back. Stay away from the ?bad girlfriends of food,? as Kirchhoff cleverly calls them. They?re the ones that give you a quick thrill and make you feel like crap afterwards, leave you wanting more and are TERRIBLE for you in the long run. ?Settle down? with great food, and you?ll be in a happy and satisfying commitment for life.

College of Idaho Board Votes to Reinstate Football, Potentially Join Frontier

Story Created: May 14, 2012 at 8:19 PM MDT

Story Updated: May 14, 2012 at 8:31 PM MDT

CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) - The College of Idaho says its board of trustees has voted to bring back football after a 35-year absence.

School officials issued a statement Monday shortly before a press conference on the Caldwell campus.

Athletics director Marty Holly says the college wants to tap into some of the enthusiasm surrounding the Boise State football program. Holly says the school could attract students who might not make the cut at Boise State or Idaho, but could thrive at an NAIA college.

He says those athletes are now going to places like Carroll College in Montana and Willamette University in Oregon, and he'd like them to stay closer to home. Holly and College of Idaho President Marv Henberg plan to meet with officials from the Frontier Conference next month.

Nuggets' Kenneth Faried third in NBA rookie voting; Irving tops

Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried, fighting Lakers center Jordan Hill for the ball, is being penciled in as Denver's starting power forward. (John Leyba, The Denver Post)

The 22nd pick in the NBA draft finished third in the voting for rookie of the year. Not a bad accomplishment for Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried, who began the season on the end of the bench and finished the season averaging a double-double in the playoffs.

The Cavaliers' Kyrie Irving, who hit a game-winning shot against Denver this season, won the NBA's top rookie award today. The point guard was the top pick in last summer's draft. Another point guard, Minnesota's Ricky Rubio, finished second in the voting.

Denver's Faried didn't play for the first third of the season, but he made a huge splash once he saw the floor, energizing teammates and fans alike with his emphatic dunks and voracious rebounding.

For the season, the 6-foot-8 Faried averaged 10.2 points and 7.7 rebounds ? and in the postseason against the Lakers, he averaged 10.4 points and 10.0 rebounds.

Faried had two games that will stand out for years. Against the Celtics on St. Patricks' Day, he had 18 points and 16 rebounds in the Nuggets victory, and made all five field-goals attempts and all eight free-throw attempts. The game was played at Pepsi Center, where on March 17 the previous year, he blocked a potential game-winning shot for Morehead State, which shocked Louisville in the NCAA Tournament.

And Faried's best game of his rookie season happened April 9, when he had 27 points and 17 rebounds in only 24 minutes against Golden State.

Irving finished with 592 total voting points, while Rubio had 170 and Faried had 129.

Among rookies, Irving ranked first in scoring (18.5 ppg), field-goal percentage (.469) and free-throw percentage (.872), while placing second in assists (5.4 apg) and three-point field goal percentage (.399).

Review: Samson Carbon 49 USB MIDI Controller

Carbon 49 with iPadIf you are looking for Piano or Rhodes-like feel for serious playing, Samson's Carbon 49 USB MIDI Controller may not be right for you. However, if you need a keyboard for some light playing or sample triggering, why not keep the expensive?Kronos?at home and bring the Carbon 49 out for the dangerous outdoor gigs that require expendable equipment? (I have seen many an expensive keyboard dragged end over end behind a golf cart after a show, or dropped or had beer spilled all over it while it was?being underutilized at a gig as a mere MIDI controller). Don't get me wrong, the Carbon 49 ? originally announced at NAMM but available starting today ? is a decently constructed keyboard controller and it comes complete with the usual on-board tools of the MIDI trade (modulation wheel, pitch wheel, data knob). Most importantly, it's fairly portable and can use a laptop or even an iPad (not included) for both its MIDI brain and complete power supply (which makes for light travel). That's a pretty great feature actually!

The idea of one computer per student is becoming increasingly common in the Swedish school system. The University of Gothenburg, Sweden, is now conducting several studies on the educational consequences of the so-called 1:1 initiative in a group of Swedish municipalities.

'The teacher is the key to successful use of computers in the classroom,' says Professor Berner Lindstrm, scientific director of the studies.

More than two-thirds of all Swedish municipalities have implemented a 1:1 project to some degree, a development that started 3-4 years ago. Some municipalities go all out and provide students at all levels with personal laptops or tablets, whereas others have chosen to move slower and test the idea in just a few schools.

The argument behind the major investments is partly that the school system should prepare students for life in a digital society and partly that personal computers are expected to reduce or even eliminate the digital divide between those who are able to use computers as a learning tool and those who are not.

However, the effects of student computers on learning remain largely unexplored.

'The effects depend on whether the teacher knows how to use computers and tablets in the classroom,' says Lindstrm. This implies advanced subject matter knowledge; knowledge of how to use ICT for pedagogical purposes; knowledge and skills of how personally to use ICT; knowledge about ICT and societal changes; and furthermore, knowledge of how to work with ICT and school development on the classroom level.

The studied municipalities are Falkenberg, Jnkping and Mlndal. The overall purpose of the studies is to assess how teaching and learning processes change as a consequence of access to ICT, information and communication technology.

'Since the digital technologies have changed the world, they are also changing the schools. But there needs to be an infrastructure, a critical mass of practical use, before it becomes a natural part of school activities,' says Lindstrm.

The Gothenburg researchers are not looking at the new technology as such, but rather at what is actually done in the classrooms and how it compares with traditional classroom activities.

'What we have seen is that the use of ICT is limited by the established teaching methods, task designs and examination formats. For example, some teachers are questioning what ICT can add to their teaching, since they already have effective methods in place. But that's a view that's based on the questionable notion that ICT is an instrument that can be used to improve traditional teaching, when rather the whole issue concerns the fundamental question of what it means to be knowledgeable and skilled in modern society, 'ICT should be seen as a tool that is an integral part of subject matter knowledge for example, knowledge in mathematics is not only knowledge of abstract mathematical concepts but also how to solve problems using mathematics software for modeling, simulation and visualization. ICT is more and more becoming a natural part of teaching and learning, like paper and pencils,' says Lindstrm.

Tyson Beckford Sex Tape: On the Way?

An alleged Tyson Beckford sex tape said to feature male supermodel enjoying himself is being shopped around the adult entertainment community, insiders say.

What does the purported porn of the amateur variety contain?

The seller insists the 45-minute tape shows the former Polo model pleasuring himself during a recent Internet video chat with a female model.

Seriously ... that's according to the seller.

Tyson Beckford Photo

During the hot chat session, Tyson Beckford supposedly makes references to some of the movies he's appeared in, and talks about some of his co-stars.

He also says his pet peeve is being mistaken for Tyrese Gibson. That we believe.

A rep for Beckford says his camp has not seen the footage and will not release any statement until they can view the material being shopped around.

Slow year for these things so far. Other celebrity sex tape stars in the news in recent months? Hulk Hogan, John Edwards, Gordon Ramsay and 2Pac.

Visualized: 121-megapixel satellite photos show Earth in glorious, psychedelic detail (video)

Image

We're starting to think the Russians have an inside track on high-resolution space photos. When Nokia's 41-megapixel photo of Earth's horizon was just a twinkle in the 808 PureView designers' eyes, the Russian Federal Space Agency had long since finished taking 121-megapixel photos of the whole planet that we're just now seeing in earnest. Unlike NASA photos, which are usually composites of multiple shots, the Elektro-L weather satellite's images display the entire planet in one ridiculously detailed take from 22,369 miles away. Why the trippy colors? Instead of just displaying Earth as-is -- real colors are so passé, dahling -- the satellite layers on near-infrared imagery that paints vegetation in wide swaths of rust-like orange.

You can get a peep of what a day-night cycle looks like for Elektro-L in the video below, and hop over to the sources to get an inkling of just how insanely detailed the images can be. You can also be slightly jealous of the satellite's network connection: at a minimum 2.6Mbps and maximum 16.4Mbps for bandwidth, odds are that it has faster broadband than you do.
