US finalizes deal to sell F-15s to Saudi Arabia

The sale of $30 billion worth of F-15SA fighter jets to Saudi Arabia has been finalized, boosting the military strength of a key U.S. ally in the Middle East to help counter Iran, the Obama administration announced Thursday.

Under the agreement, the U.S. will send Saudi Arabia 84 new fighter jets and upgrades for 70 more. Production of the aircraft, which will be manufactured by Boeing Co., will support 50,000 jobs and have a $3.5 billion annual economic impact in the U.S., the White House said.

The sale is part of a larger U.S. effort to realign its defense policies in the Persian Gulf to keep Iran in check. The announcement came as U.S. officials weighed a fresh threat from Tehran. Tehran warned this week it could disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital Persian Gulf oil transport route, if Washington levies new sanctions targeting Iran's crude exports.

The fighter jet sale is part of a larger 10-year, $60 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia that also includes helicopters, a broad array of missiles, bombs and delivery systems, as well as radar warning systems and night-vision goggles. Congress gave the deal the go-ahead about a year ago.

The plan initially raised concerns from pro-Israeli lawmakers, but U.S. officials reassured Congress that Israel's military edge would not be undercut by the sale. Additionally, there is now broad agreement among Israel, the Gulf Arab states and the West that Iran poses a significant and unpredictable threat.

Saudi Arabia and Iran are bitter regional rivals. Tensions between them were further stoked earlier this year after the U.S. accused Iran of plotting to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. in Washington earlier this year.

Saudi Arabia is already the most militarily advanced of the Arab Gulf states, one of the richest countries in the world, and central to American policy in the Middle East. It is also vital to U.S. energy security, with Saudi Arabia ranking as the third-largest source of U.S. oil imports.

The White House announced the agreement with Saudi Arabia from Hawaii, where President Barack Obama is vacationing.

THE VILLAGES, Fla. (AP) ? Singer and actress Kaye Stevens, who performed with the Rat Pack and was a frequent guest on Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show," has died at a central Florida hospital. She was 79.

Close friend Gerry Schweitzer confirmed that Stevens died Wednesday at the Villages Hospital north of Orlando following a battle with breast cancer and blood clots.

Stevens, a longtime South Florida resident, performed with Rat Pack members including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop. She also sang solo at venues like Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and the Plaza Hotel's Persian Room in New York City.

During the Vietnam War era, Stevens performed for American soldiers in the war zone with Bob Hope's USO tour.

According to a handout from friend Rhonda Glenn, Stevens was born Catherine Louise Stephens in Pittsburgh. Her family eventually moved to Cleveland, where a teenage Stevens got her start as a drummer and singer. She later married now deceased bandleader and trumpet player Tommy Amato, and the couple performed throughout the eastern U.S.

During a gig in New Jersey, Stevens was discovered by Ed McMahon, Carson's longtime sidekick, which led to new bookings. Her big break came when she was playing a lounge at The Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. Debbie Reynolds became ill and was unable to perform in the main room. Stevens filled in and was an instant hit.

Besides singing, Stevens also acted in film and television. She appeared in six movies, earning a Golden Globe nomination in 1964 for "The New Interns." She was a regular celebrity player on game shows and appeared as a regular on "Days of Our Lives" from 1974-79.

During the past two decades, Stevens started her own ministry and began performing only Christian and patriotic music. She staged benefits to help build St. Vincent Catholic Church in her longtime home of Margate, Fla., where city officials named a park in her honor.

When Ranking Facebook Adoption As Percentage Of Population, Cyprus Is #1

facebook-penetration.003Which countries really, really love Facebook? If you guessed the U.S., you would be somewhat right - this country ranks #7 on Pingdom's new list of countries comparing the number of Facebook users as percentages of the population. To be clear, we're not talking about raw number of Facebook users. The U.S. is still #1 there. This is ranking countries by what percentage of the population (online and total) is on Facebook. Or, more simply put, it's looking at how popular Facebook is in that country.

New year brings new risks for California politicians

Ask most people what's significant about Dec. 30 and you may get a puzzled look. But politics junkies know that's the official start of California's next election season.

It opens on a markedly altered stage, set with a new primary system and different voting districts. Lingering uncertainties about some of those districts, thanks to a federal lawsuit and a possible state referendum aimed at overturning them, are adding to the drama.

Not since term limits for state offices took effect in the mid-1990s have California politicians faced such risks to their careers.

"There are more wild cards in the 2012 elections than we've seen" in nearly two decades, said Thad Kousser, a UC San Diego political scientist.

Friday is the first day candidates for legislative and congressional races can take out papers to run. But given the new wrinkles in the state election system, hundreds of candidates started raising money and campaigning months ago, some even before the redistricting commission finished the new political maps.

"There's been a lot of work done [by candidates] trying to strategically position themselves into a district," said consultant Paul Mitchell, who advises politicians on redistricting. To some, early announcements seemed "like a big advantage."

But there are still opportunities for those who hadn't made up their minds so soon, he added: "We still see some people running around looking for districts, and we still have some retirements and [contest] shifts to go."

Those who wish to collect nomination signatures rather than pay a filing fee to get on the June primary ballot have until Feb. 23 to do so. After that, the filing period ends March 9 for most races.

In the new "top-two" primary, the first- and second-place finishers, regardless of political party, will go head to head in November. Candidates may state on the ballot that they belong to a state-recognized political party or that they have "no party preference."

That change and the new voting districts, drawn for the first time by a citizens group instead of by lawmakers protecting incumbents, were promoted as ways to help end partisan gridlock. The combination, proponents said, would lead to more competitive races, produce more moderate officeholders and reduce the extremism that has bedeviled Sacramento and Washington.

But voters, who approved both new systems, may be disappointed if they expect significantly more competition between the main parties, experts say. That's partly because Democrats account for nearly half of the voters in California, and there are too few Republicans to compete in many areas.

Another factor is what Mitchell calls "residential sorting." Like-minded voters tend to live in the same areas. Liberal Democrats cluster in urban centers, and conservative Republicans tend to dominate in more rural areas.

Still, it wouldn't take many more swing districts to change the dynamic in Sacramento, said Dan Schnur, director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at USC and a former Republican advisor.

Even a dozen or so competitive districts in the 120-member Legislature "can create some common ground that makes it easier for the two parties to work together," Schnur said.

He and other politics experts agreed that the unknown factors in the new election environment will help keep officeholders and candidates on their toes.

"The combination of redistricting and the open primary is going to produce unpredictability, and politicians faced with unpredictability tend to be nervous politicians," Schnur said. "And nervous politicians tend to be responsive politicians.

"Regardless of how either of these reforms works out in the long run, large numbers of candidates are likely to spend more time listening to voters than they have in the past.... And that's a good thing."

Mother-Toddler Bond May Influence Teen Obesity (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Dec. 26 (HealthDay News) -- Teens are more likely to be obese if they had a poor emotional relationship with their mother when they were toddlers, according to a new study.

The findings echo previous research showing that toddlers who didn't have close emotional ties with their parents were more likely to be obese by the time they were 4.5 years old.

In the latest study, researchers examined U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development data collected from hundreds of families who lived in nine states and had children who were born in 1991.

The analysis showed that the children's risk of obesity at age 15 was highest among those who had the lowest-quality emotional relationship with their mothers when they were toddlers, the Ohio State University researchers said.

More than one-quarter of the toddlers who had the lowest-quality relationships with their mothers were obese as teens, compared with 13 percent of those who had closer bonds with their mothers in their early years, according to the report published online and in the January print issue of the journal Pediatrics.

These and previous findings indicate that the risk of obesity may be affected by areas of the brain that control emotions and stress responses working together with those that control appetite and energy balance, the investigators explained.

The authors suggested that obesity prevention efforts should include strategies to improve the mother-child bond, as well as promoting healthier eating and exercise.

"It is possible that childhood obesity could be influenced by interventions that try to improve the emotional bonds between mothers and children rather than focusing only on children's food intake and activity," lead author Sarah Anderson, an assistant professor of epidemiology, said in an Ohio State University news release.

"The sensitivity a mother displays in interacting with her child may be influenced by factors she can't necessarily control. Societally, we need to think about how we can support better-quality maternal-child relationships, because that could have an impact on child health," Anderson added.

(AP) ? A blind dog that was lost and believed to be dead is reunited with his San Antonio family for Christmas, thanks to Craigslist, a school teacher and an animal care agency.

Nearly a month after Stevie Oedipus Wonder disappeared ? and was reported dead ? the cairn terrier mix puppy is home for the holiday, the San Antonio Express-News reported Saturday (http://bit.ly/unONGF .)

"This is my Christmas miracle," Stevie's owner Belinda Gutierrez said. "I actually thought I was going to have a sad end of the year and a sad Christmas."

Stevie, a dog born without eyes and apparently abused by a previous owner, was found early in 2011 by Gutierrez's daughter as he wandered near a city duck pond. Instantly, the dog became a part of the family, responding to their voices and dragging Gutierrez out for exercise.

Days after Thanksgiving, though, Stevie escaped ? disappearing from the family's home. Days later, Gutierrez's landlord told her the dog was dead.

On Dec. 11, Stevie showed up at Animal Care Services. A collar and tag kept him alive for five days, Jeanne Saadi, the agency's live release coordinator, said. But with outdated information, the agency failed to find his owners and prepared to euthanize him.

That's when Brooke Orr, a high school teacher, saw the agency's ad seeking a home for the blind dog. She agreed to care for Stevie over the holidays, buying him a few more days.

Meanwhile, Gutierrez's distraught daughter posted a lost dog notice on Craigslist, hoping someone would see it and return Stevie.

Orr noticed the tag dangling on the dog's neck.

"I thought that he must belong to someone. So I went to Craigslist and went to lost and found and I put in 'blind dog,' and there he was," she said.

She contacted Gutierrez, who arrived at the Animal Care Services on Thursday uncertain the dog would be able to recognize her.

"All he had to do was hear my voice," she said. "I stood at the entrance of the kennel building and called out 'Stevie, Stevie.' And he started barking all over the place."

Now back at home, Stevie will awake Christmas morning to a stocking stuffed with doggy treats, rawhide chew toys and carrots, one of his favorites.

Mitt Romney?s Limited Understanding Of ?Jobs?

Mitt Romney seems to think his strongest issue in a general-election race against President Obama is jobs. I?d argue he has that backwards.

In an interview with TIME Magazine?s Mark Halperin, Romney said, ?I know that the Democrats will try and make this a campaign about Bain Capital?. 25 million people are out of work because of Barack Obama. And so I?ll compare my experience in the private sector where, net-net, we created over 100,000 jobs.?

?I?ll compare that record with his record, where he has not created any new jobs.?

This detachment from reality fascinates me, so let?s unwrap the argument.

First, the confused former governor believes 25 million people are out of work ?because of Barack Obama.? If Romney can explain why Obama is to blame for a recession that began in 2007, I?d love to hear it. For that matter, the economy lost 3.6 million jobs in 2008 ? the year before the president took office. How exactly is Obama responsible for that, too?

Second, Romney now claims to have created ?over 100,000 jobs? at his vulture-capitalist firm. Romney also appears to have made this number up out of whole cloth. Indeed, two weeks ago, when Romney?s Super PAC ran an ad claiming he ?helped create thousands of jobs? as CEO at Bain, Super PAC officials were asked to back that up with evidence. They refused.

Third, it?s remarkable that Romney is only willing to compare his ?experience in the private sector.? What about when Romney was willing to put his experience to work in the public sector, during his one term as governor of Massachusetts? Romney doesn?t want to talk about it for a reason ? his state?s record on job creation was ?one of the worst in the country,? ranking 47th out of 50 states in job growth. It?s one of the reasons Romney left office after one term deeply unpopular, and why his former constituents don?t want him near the White House.

And fourth, Obama ?has not created any new jobs?? The ease with which Romney lies continues to be disconcerting.

With one month remaining this year, the U.S. private sector has now added 1.67 million jobs in 2011, well ahead of last year?s private-sector total of 1.2 million, and the best year for businesses since 2006. Since March 2010, American businesses have created 2.9 million jobs.

I?d encourage Romney to consider this chart showing private-sector job growth by month since the Great Recession began?

?and this chart showing private-sector job growth by year over the last two decades (and 2011 isn?t over yet).

Reporters really need to brush up on this stuff. When Romney lies to their face ? which seems to happen just about every day ? they should be able to push back with reality.

?

Viagra against heart failure: Researchers throw light on the mechanism

ScienceDaily (Dec. 23, 2011) ? How sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, can alleviate heart problems is reported by Bochum's researchers in cooperation with colleagues from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (Minnesota) in the journal Circulation. They studied dogs with diastolic heart failure, a condition in which the heart chamber does not sufficiently fill with blood. The scientists showed that sildenafil makes stiffened cardiac walls more elastic again. The drug activates an enzyme that causes the giant protein titin in the myocardial cells to relax.

"We have developed a therapy in an animal model that, for the first time, also raises hopes for the successful treatment of patients" says Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Linke of the RUB Institute of Physiology.

"Rubber band proteins" can be influenced

Sildenafil inhibits a specific enzyme (phosphodiesterase 5 A), which causes the increased formation of a messenger substance (cGMP). The messenger substance activates the enzyme protein kinase G, which attaches phosphate groups to certain proteins. This so-called phosphorylation causes blood vessels to relax, which was why the "potency pill" Viagra originally came onto the market. The Bochum and Rochester researchers found that the cardiac muscle protein titin is also phosphorylated through the same mechanism. "The titin molecules are similar to rubber bands" explains the Bochum physiologist. "They contribute decisively to the stiffness of the cardiac walls." The activity of the protein kinase G causes titin to relax. This makes the cardiac walls more elastic. The effect occurs within minutes of administering the drug.

Heart failure drugs currently not sufficient

"Of all the patients aged over 60 who are in hospital because of a weak heart, half suffer from diastolic heart failure" explains Linke. "Although we know that the decreased distensibility of the cardiac walls is the cause, the disease cannot be treated properly with today's medicines." In the so-called "Relax" study of the Heart Failure Network, the efficacy of sildenafil in people is already being tested. "If, for the first time, the drug is found to have a positive effect on heart failure, we would already have a molecular mechanism on hand to explain the effect" says Linke.

North Korea After Kim - What Kim Jong-il's Death Means for Israel

As North Korean's mourn the death of their Supreme Leader, Kim Jong-il, Israelis are wondering if his 28-year-old son will be any less of an enemy of the Jewish state.

While it's too early to tell what changes Kim Jong-un has in store for the reclusive nation of 24 million people, Israeli officials aren't particularly optimistic they will be for the good.

"Nothing from the outside penetrates them," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor, noting that Jong-il's death still leaves the country "distant and dangerous" for Israel.

North Korea has never been a friend of Israel, choosing to support its communist allies and others whose political interests usually run counter to Western values.

In Israel, Kim Jong-il was largely known as the man who helped Syria launch a covert nuclear weapons program that the IAF allegedly took down in 2007. He also played a key role in arming Libya, Egypt and Syria with missile technology while helping Iran to expand its atomic weapons program.

According to an article in the Jerusalem Post, however, North Korea's role in arming Hezbollah has inflicted the most damage upon Israel.

Before the Second Lebanon War, North Korea sent missile components to Iran, where they were assembled and then shipped to Hezbollah?s leaders in southern Lebanon, specifically for use against Israeli civilian targets.

Kim Jong-il?s regime also helped the Lebanese terror group build an extensive network of underground military installations, bunkers, tunnels and storage facilities in south Lebanon, under the auspices of a front company, the Korea Mining Development Corporation. It also gave Hezbollah leaders weapons and intelligence training to improve attacks against Israel.

By most accurate accounts, which are few and far between, Kim Jong-un is unprepared to assume control of the outcast country and its military as successfully as his father did in 1994.

While the consequences of the latest transition of power will have a more immediate impact on Northeast Asia, Israel can't expect to be left any better off in the near future. Conversely, it will continue dealing with the greater mess in the region that has become Jong-il's unfortunate legacy.

Turkey set for spat with France over "genocide" bill (Reuters)

PARIS/ANKARA (Reuters) ? Relations between France and rising regional power Turkey are likely to nose-dive after a vote in the French parliament on Thursday that would make it a crime to deny that the 1915 mass killing of Armenians was genocide.

Faced with French President Nicolas Sarkozy's open hostility to Turkey's all-but stagnant bid to join the European Union, and buoyed by a fast-growing economy, Ankara has little to lose by picking a political fight with Paris.

With Turkey taking an increasingly pivotal and influential role in the Middle East, especially over Syria, Iran and Libya, France could experience some diplomatic discomfort, and French firms could lose out on lucrative Turkish contracts.

Even though nearly 100 years have passed since the killings that coincided with World War One, successive Turkish governments and the vast majority of Turks feel the charge of genocide is a direct insult to their nation.

Turkish leaders also argue that the bill, proposed by 40 deputies from Sarkozy's party, is a blatant attempt at winning the votes of 500,000 ethnic Armenians in France in next year's elections, limits freedom of speech and is an unnecessary meddling by politicians in a business best left to historians.

"This proposed law targets and is hostile to the Republic of Turkey, the Turkish nation and the Turkish community living in France," Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan wrote in a tersely worded letter to Sarkozy last week.

"I want to state clearly that such steps will have grave consequences for future relations between Turkey and France in political, economic, cultural and all areas," he said.

The volume of trade between France and Turkey from January to November this year was more than $13.5 billion, according to Turkish government statistics. France is Turkey's fifth biggest export market and the sixth biggest source of its imports.

FRENCH FIRMS FACE LOSSES

The French government has stressed that the bill, which mandates a 45,000-euro fine and a year in jail for offenders, is not its own initiative and pointed out that Turkey cannot impose unilateral trade sanctions.

"We have to remember international rules and with regard to Turkey it's a member of the WTO (World Trade Organisation) and is linked to the European Union by a customs union and these two commitments mean a non-discriminatory policy towards all companies within the European Union," said French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero.

The Turkish government has ruled out an embargo, but has hinted at a boycott. "There will be an effect on consumer preferences," said Turkish Industry Minister Nihat Ergun.

Others went further and suggested French firms might lose out in profitable defense deals and contracts to build energy pipelines and Turkey's first nuclear power station.

"France is about to commit a political sin. Newly arising French-Turkish ties in the energy sector may not be in a position to overcome this," state-run Anatolian news agency quoted Energy Minister Taner Yildiz as saying.

When France passed a law recognizing the killing of Armenians as genocide in 2001, Turkey was in the midst of an economic crisis, and reacted in a similar vein, but figures show trade between the two countries nevertheless grew steadily.

The French lower house of parliament first passed a bill criminalizing the denial of an Armenian genocide in 2006, but it was finally rejected by the Senate in May of this year.

The new bill was made more general to outlaw the denial of any genocide, partly in the hope of appeasing the Turks. While it is very likely to be approved by the lower house, it could also face a long passage into law, though its backers want to see it completed before April's French presidential election.

Armenia, backed by many historians and parliaments, says some 1.5 million Christian Armenians were killed in what is now eastern Turkey during World War One in a deliberate policy of genocide ordered by the Ottoman Empire.

Ankara denies the killings constitute genocide and says many Muslim Turks and Kurds were also put to death as Russian troops invaded eastern Anatolia, often aided by Armenian militias.

CONFIDENT TURKEY

The Republic of Turkey emerged from the remnants of the Ottoman Empire in 1923 after more than 10 years of almost continual warfare against the British, French, Russians, Arabs, Armenians and Greeks, all of them intent on carving off territory from the dying state.

After war, massacres, famine and massive population movements, the new republic was much more religiously and ethnically homogenous than ever before and Turkey's new leaders pursued a secular nationalism that turned its back on the past.

"The problem is that the Turkish people don't know what happened," said Cengiz Aktar, professor of political science at Istanbul's Bahcesehir University.

While folk memories of the trauma survive in the villages of eastern Turkey, the education system has always set out to deny any official policy to kill off the Armenians, instead painting a picture of valiant Turks emerging victorious from onslaughts on all sides from treacherous former friends and allies.

The French bill feeds into the sense that many Turks have that they are unwanted by an arrogant Europe and fires up nationalist fervor, though in a more self-confident Turkey, Turkish popular reaction has been more muted than in the past.

Francois Rochebloine, president of the Franco-Armenian friendship group in the French lower house and a leading proponent of the bill, said he did not expect any lasting repercussions.

"These pressures already existed when France in 2001 recognized the Armenia genocide," said Rochebloine. At that time, he said, "we received two cubic meters of mail and faxes (opposing it), but life continued and Turkey is not mad."

But the Turkey of 2011 is a very different place from 10 years ago.

"Today, unfortunately (Turkey's) EU process ... is almost dead and Turkey's hands are not tied anymore. Turkey's economy is one of the strongest in the world so for this Turkey, one should make a different calculation," Volkan Bozkir, the head of Turkey's Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, said in Paris after lobbying French officials.

Spanish town celebrates after $940 million lottery win

Days before Christmas, a town of 2,000 in cash-strapped Spain found itself richer by ?720 million ($940 million) Thursday after scooping the top prize in the nation's famed Christmas lottery.

Billed as the world's richest, the lottery dishes out some ?2.52 billion ($3.29 billion) to winners across the nation.

The top prize ? dubbed "El Gordo" (The Fat One) ? was split among the holders of tickets bearing the number 58268. The number appeared on 1,800 tickets, giving winners ?400,000 for their ?20 ticket ($27).

The state lottery agency said all 1,800 tickets with that number were sold in the town of Granen, located in the arid and barren northeastern Los Monegros area.

Sparkling wine
The news brought the town's residents out onto the street to dance, sing, hug each other and spray sparkling wine all over.

"It's brilliant!" Pilar Azagra, who runs the town's lottery store, told Spanish National Television. She appeared a bit stunned.

"I haven't had time to react, the number came out and then people started flocking to the shop," she said, adding that many in her family had bought ?20 tickets.

Azagra said the windfall was more than welcome as several companies in Granen had closed because of the economic crisis forcing many residents to seek employment in neighboring towns and cities.

Spain is struggling to emerge from a near two-year recession that has left it with a eurozone-high 21.5 percent unemployment rate. However, about 90 percent of adult Spaniards play the Christmas lottery.

Share-the-wealth system
The Gordo lottery aims for a share-the-wealth system, rather than a single jackpot, and thousands of numbers yield at least some kind of return. Lots of people chip in together and buy shares of several or many tickets, meaning it is common for multiple prizes to go to the same town.

Other lotteries have larger individual top prizes but El Gordo is ranked as the world's richest for the total sum paid out.

The winning number was picked and announced by pupils of Madrid's Saint Ildefonso School in a nationally televised draw.

Since it began in 1812, the Dec. 22 lottery has become a favorite holiday tradition. This year, it sold an estimated ?2.7 billion in tickets and the state lottery agency estimated per-capita spending of about ?70.

"The lottery is part of the Spanish DNA," said Loterias y Apuestas del Estado chairman Aurelio Martinez earlier this year at a presentation of the planned sale of 30 percent of the lottery operator. The sale was pulled in September due to tough market conditions.

Spain holds another big lottery Jan. 6 to mark the Feast of the Epiphany. It is known as "El Nino" (The Child), in reference to the baby Jesus.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

No. 22 Murray State beats Tenn.-Martin 78-54 (AP)

MURRAY, Ky. ? Despite a 24-point loss to No. 22 Murray State, Tennessee-Martin coach Jason James is staying positive.

"I think we kind of surprised them a little bit by being a little more aggressive, especially with their ball screens," James said. "A couple times we trapped out a timeout and usually in our other games we're laying back and trying to be in the right position, but today it was important for us to be more aggressive and we did that and it was very effective for us."

Donte Poole scored 15 points and the 22nd-ranked Racers remained unbeaten with the win in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams.

"We knew the OVC opener would be a good test for us and they put us to the test," Poole said. "I think they kind of surprised us with their defensive intensity, we weren't prepared for it as much as we thought we would be so we adjusted for it."

Ivan Aska added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists to help the Racers (13-0, 1-0) to their best start in 75 years. The only better start was 16-0 in 1935-36.

"(This win) means a lot to us getting ready for a conference championship and this is my last time playing for an opener and you can't get too sloppy or get comfortable you just have to keep on working," Poole said.

Myles Taylor had 22 points for the Skyhawks (3-11, 0-1), who dropped to 0-3 against ranked teams this season. They lost to Louisville and Mississippi State.

"They're pretty good," Taylor said of Murray State. "We've been watching four or five films on them and we knew what they wanted to do so we just tried to stop them. We can't control the shots they make or the plays they make because they've got great players but we've got great players too."

Taylor may have complimented his opponent, but he had a final word to the Racers: "When they come to our house it's going to be a closer game and they better be ready."

Murray State is one of six Division I teams without a loss.

The Racers, who committed 24 turnovers, lead the all-time series with Tennessee-Martin 39-3 and are 22-0 at home against the Skyhawks.

"I'm just excited to get the win and more importantly to get the first OVC win," Racers coach Steve Prohm said. "I'm not even thinking about the 13 wins, I'm excited to be 1-0 in the conference. This was a tough game because it's the opening game of conference and then it's the Christmas game to where these guys have a foot out the door and you've got to get them focused and locked in."

Murray State shot 65.2 percent from the field in taking a 36-16 halftime lead. The Skyhawks shot just 23.3 percent and were outrebounded 22-15 in the opening 20 minutes.

Poole scored 13 points in the second half, saying his teammates made a difference in his outlook going into the final 20 minutes.

"It was a rough first half, (the Skyhawks) were doing some things on the defensive end that we prepared for but I misjudged," Poole said. "I got frustrated with myself and I let it take control of me a little bit. Going into the second half the guys were just saying to me `Be aggressive' and `Get out of it, you've got to play through it we've got a lot more season to go, there are going to be a lot tougher games than this,' so it was just an adjustment I had to make. I just had to be aggressive so I looked for open shots and took them, my teammates were also looking for me and that helped a lot."

James said: "I don't know you ever expect to get beat (by) 24. We knew they were good and would have to play nearly perfect to win. I thought we'd play a little smarter than we did, I thought we would rebound from our Sunday debacle a little bit, so I don't know that it's what I expected but they're a good team."

Isaiah Canaan, Murray State's leading scorer with a 19.3 average, entered the game needing 20 points to reach the 1,000 mark. He didn't score until 15 minutes into the game and finished with 10 but he did lead the team in assists with seven.

Less than 5 minutes into the game Canaan charged toward the basket as if he was going to lay the ball in then passed to Ed Daniel for a dunk for the first of his assists.

"If Isaiah can have seven assists, 10 points and six rebounds and gets to the free throw line nine times, it's a pretty good night," Prohm said. "One thing I like about our team is that we're developing into a team where he doesn't have to get 20 or 25, he can get 10 with six rebounds and that's pretty good for a point guard, so I'm pretty excited about that."

Both teams made four 3-point field goals but Murray State only took nine attempts while the Skyhawks took 16.

With the Racers leading by 31 points coach Steve Prohm covered his face and hung his head when Jaylen Bland attempted a layup that was leaning toward the theatrical. Less than a minute later Bland redeemed himself with consecutive layups to increase the lead to 35.

"I'm proud of our guys finishing out the first semester on a strong, positive note," Prohm said. "They're ready to get home and see their family for a couple days and they need to enjoy that time."

Yoani Sanchez: Zombies in Havana

Movie poster for Juan of the Dead

The nothingness, the apathy, the wall at the corner to sit on, forever wasting time. The hero of the film Juan of the Dead was already acting like a corpse before the zombies invaded Havana, a city in fact shrouded and dead. This fictional antihero calls on his creativity and ingenuity -- in the midst of chaos -- to establish a blood-chilling business. "We kill your loved ones," reads the slogan of the company he creates with other pals as dysfunctional as he is; its market niche is to hunt the living dead. An enjoyable script mixes humor and fantasy, special effects and unretouched reality. On this side of the screen viewers are caught between terror and snickers, watching the image of the Capitol destroyed by a helicopter and the emblematic Fosca building reduced to rubble. They laugh and cringe at the same time.

Directed by Alejandro Brugu?s, Juan of the Dead is causing a furor in the Cuban capital. It has provoked extremely long lines outside the movie theaters, some of which end up with police beatings and pepper spray falling on dozen of eyes. But the curiosity in this case has been greater than the caution. More than gazing on a story of beings taken from our worst nightmares, the public wants to decipher the second reading contained in the film. Especially in the scenes where hundreds of desperate people leap over the wall of the Malecon -- into the sea -- to escape a county where putrefaction is gaining ground.

Something of the automatism of the shock troops and of the mob prepared to attack those who are different, is also exhibited by these frightful creatures that the hero confronts and whom he can only overcome by "destroying their brains." And Juan is a character of great irreverence, someone who, according to his own words, has survived "Mariel, the war in Angola, the Special Period and what came later." Such that, between laughter and shrieks, the metaphor crumbles, it is more direct. And it ends up tossing into the laps of the audience, perched on their seats, the cynical but clear question: Won't you also be like corpses, a faraway look in your restless eyes, like zombies with no future plans, walking along La Rampa.*

*Translator's note: La Rampa is a long street running down to the Malecon, and the sea, the location of much of what passes for what is left of Havana's night life.

China toll evader first given life gets short term (AP)

BEIJING ? China says a man originally sentenced to life in prison for evading highway tolls has had his punishment reduced to 2 1/2 years.

A court in the central province of Henan handed down Shi Jianfeng's new sentence and a 10,000 yuan (1,577) fine on Thursday following a lengthy review.

Shi's original fraud sentence sparked a rare public outcry over a legal system that many consider unfair and politically tainted.

He was accused of evading more than $560,000 in highway cargo tolls by mounting fake military license plates on his gravel trucks.

Vehicles with military plates are exempt from the onerous tolls that can add hundreds of dollars to the cost of transporting goods over long distances.

HBO buys Leonardo DiCaprio executive-produced series (Reuters)

LO ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Leonardo DiCaprio is coming to HBO -- in a behind-the-camera capacity, anyway.

HBO is developing a drama series based on the 2009 Josh Bazell novel "Beat the Reaper," with DiCaprio executive-producing.

"Ocean's Thirteen" screenwriters Brian Koppleman and David Levien are penning the project, as well as co-executive producing.

Also executive-producing are Jennifer Davisson Killoran, of DiCaprio's production company Appian Way, and Julie Yorn, of LBI Entertainment, along with new Regency's Arnon Milchan and New Regency alum Bob Harper and Hutch Parker.

New Regency initially acquired the rights to the book, as a potential starring vehicle for DiCaprio.

The Bazell novel revolves around a medical resident in the Federal Witness Protection Program, who describes his history as a mafia hitman through a series of flashbacks. In the present time, he must save a mob acquaintance from his past in order to prevent him from revealing the resident's location to the local crime boss.

Deadline first reported the news.

(AP Photo/Misha Japaridze)

(AP) ? The billionaire owner of the New Jersey Nets running for the Russian presidency against Vladimir Putin is expected to make a formal offer to buy a leading media holding Wednesday, his representative said.

Mikhail Prokhorov, who is worth about $18 billion, according to Forbes magazine, announced his candidacy earlier this week for the March presidential election.

Prokhorov will be making a formal offer to buy the Kommersant publishing house from Alisher Usmanov, Prokhorov's spokeswoman Olga Stukalova told The Associated Press. Usmanov, however, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying he doesn't have any plans to sell it.

Usmanov, a metals magnate, bought Kommersant for $200 million in 2006. The holding, which includes Russia's top business daily and other publications, has since expanded into radio and television broadcast.

On Tuesday, Usmanov fired an editor and a senior manager after the Kommersant Vlast weekly published an article about alleged fraud in Russia's Dec. 4 parliamentary election. Among the accompanying photos was a picture of a ballot which contained vulgar words directed at Putin, and the weekly's editor, Maxim Kovalsky, said he was told that it had served as a reason for his ouster.

The election saw a sharp drop in support for Putin's United Russia party, and widespread allegations against ballot-stuffing and other violations in the vote drew tens of thousands to a protest across the river from the Kremlin ? the largest show of discontent since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

Usmanov explained his decision by saying that some recent reports in Vlast "bordered on petty hooliganism."

But Kovalsky's deputy, Veronika Kutsillo, said the photograph with the swear words was just a pretext behind the move by Usmanov, who previously had expressed his dissatisfaction with the magazine's contents.

"This isn't merely a punishment of an obstinate editor, it's a signal that the magazine's course must change," Kutsillo said in an e-mailed message, adding that she decided to resign.

More than 50 Kommersant journalists have signed an open letter to protest Kovalsky's firing. "We view this firing as an intimidation effort aimed at preventing any criticism of Vladimir Putin even if this concerns photographs," the letter said.

Putin has enjoyed blanket positive coverage from state-controlled television networks, and some of the print media, which have remained independent and often been critical of the government, have faced pressure from owners fearing their business interests could be hurt because of the criticism.

Prokhorov's presidential bid follows his botched performance before the parliamentary election when he formed a liberal party with the Kremlin's tacit support but abandoned it under what he described as Kremlin pressure.

Some observers said that Prokhorov may have made amends with the Kremlin and might be running to accommodate voters unhappy with the authorities.

But Prokhorov rejected the accusation in his blog on Wednesday.

"Naturally, my candidacy is good for the Kremlin. Naturally, they want to play democracy and show that people have 'some kind of a choice'," he wrote. "But we must absolutely use the authorities too if we don't want to just make some noise and disappear, but to change our lives for the better."

Steven Spielberg Considers Making 'Jurassic Park' 3-D

At press day for 'The Adventures of Tintin,' director tells MTV News, 'The only movie I'm interested in post-converting is the first 'Jurassic.' '
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

With so many filmmakers and studios embracing the box-office potential of post-conversion 3-D these days, it seems there are no limits to the conversion and remastering possibilities for older releases. After all, Disney just had great success with its release of "The Lion King" in 3-D, George Lucas is hard at work on the 3-D conversion of his "Star Wars" franchise, and James Cameron is set to release "Titanic 3D" next year.

When MTV News caught up with Hollywood icon and Oscar-winner Steven Spielberg recently during the press day for "The Adventures of Tintin," which was shot in 3-D, we asked whether he's considered applying post-conversion 3-D technology to any of his classics.

"I've always said 'Jurassic Park,' the first one, would be really good post-converted in 3-D," he said of his 1993 blockbuster. "I think James Cameron has done the greatest 3-D in history with 'Avatar': I don't think anything has surpassed James Cameron's 'Avatar' in terms of the 3-D experience, beyond the fact I love the movie so much, and so I figure that James is going to teach all of us a lesson how to post-convert. If we follow his precepts, more films will be post-converted, but the only movie I'm interested in post-converting is the first 'Jurassic.' "

After Cameron's "Titanic 3D" arrives in theaters in April 2012, perhaps Spielberg will be more set on whether "Jurassic Park 3D" will follow. The director made it clear he doesn't make those decisions lightly, however, speaking about whether he and George Lucas will make a rumored fifth "Indiana Jones" film.

"I would not make a fifth movie to try to prove any point," he said. "If we get a good story, I'll make it. If George [Lucas] doesn't think we should make any more, I'll listen to him."

Check out everything we've got on "The Adventures Of Tintin."

Rumblefish accesses 3.5 million songs with CD Baby deal (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? YouTube users now have a lot more music to choose from when creating a soundtrack for their videos.

Rumblefish, a company that specializes in licensing music for social media, announced Tuesday a new partnership with CD Baby, the world's largest indie music store and online music distributor.

The result is that both consumers and businesses can add music from CD Baby's catalog to their online videos, presentations and games.

That catalog includes about 3.5 million tracks from artists like Joe Purdy and Macklemore.

"We're here to help our artists connect with their fans through every avenue available," CD Baby president Brian Felsen said in a statement. "Fans can add soundtracks to their videos and slideshows, and they can share them on their favorite sites like YouTube and Vimeo."

This partnership comes less than a month after Rumblefish struck deal with APM Music, which has a vast catalog of music from films, television shows and advertisements. That opened up the music from "Avatar" and "Mad Men" to non-professional makers of YouTube videos.

When the 22-year-old college senior showed up for a $25 rider training class at a community college last year in Michigan, his aspiration was to someday buy his ultimate American icon: a Harley.

But he quickly found he was in enemy territory.

"Everyone my age was talking about buying a 'crotch rocket'" Adams said. "They wanted a Ducati or Yamaha or some other kind of import; but I never heard any other talk about a Harley."

Undeterred, Adams soon abandoned his Honda motorcycle, and paid cash for a brand new $14,000 Harley-Davidson Dark Custom Street Bob, using money he'd earned at a variety of jobs, from operating a forklift to working an internship at a Kentucky newspaper.

For the past decade, the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Harley-Davidson Inc had largely been stymied in its attempt to reach a younger audience.

As it poured resources into entirely new lines of bikes, often designed to lure the 20 and 30-something crowd, or used advocates like a Victoria Secret supermodel to encourage younger buyers to feel it's cool to own a bike ? Harley's core customer base of well-heeled baby boomers only got older.

But the effort is finally gaining traction under Chief Executive Keith Wandell, who took Harley's helm in 2009. He immediately began modernizing the company, from the assembly line to the dealership floor, even if it meant offending loyalists.

Talking to analysts at a motorcycle plant in Pennsylvania two weeks ago, Wandell said he is now squarely focused on diversifying the buyer base by "extending the reach of the brand beyond our core customers." But, he admitted "that's a touchy situation ... our core customers have allowed our company to be successful ? so there's a certain amount of jealousy, if you will, around the brand."

Some of the old timers already are pushing back on the company when they see new bare-bones retro bikes that make up the hot selling Dark Custom lineup and are aimed largely at youth, said Joe Fredo, sales manager of Harley-Davidson of New York City.

"They're like, ugh, that's not a real Harley," he said.

The effort to get younger has consumed millions of dollars worth of investment in design changes, aggressive marketing of lower-priced bikes, and a massive effort to teach thousands of aspiring bikers to operate a motorcycle.

"Our goal really was to be the No.1 seller of motorcycles to young adults in the United States," Chief Marketing Officer Mark-Hans Richer said. "We are now."

Since Wandell took over, the company has increased its share of the heavy-bike market under the age of 35 by more than a third. It now owns 48.6 percent of that market, according to R.L. Polk & Co. registration data, quadruple the share of its closest competitors in the segment.

Honda Motor Co., Suzuki Motor Corp, Yamaha Motor Corp, Kawasaki Motors Corp and Ducati Motor Holdings SpA compete head on with Harley for young buyers.

The move may come just in time for Harley, which is seeing its youth market share rise as the size of the entire market ? including sales to boomers ? has been slipping in the face of economic turmoil in recent years.

In 2008, 16.6 percent of new Harley buyers were estimated to be under the age of 35, according to company filings and J.D. Power and Associates data. By 2010, that number had increased to about 21 percent and it is expected to have remained steady in 2011.

The 108-year-old Harley-Davidson does not disclose its sales by demographic, but Richer says the company now sells more bikes to people born after Jimmy Carter was president than it sold to their parents' generation when they were the same age.

But there is still plenty of work to do.

At the Pennsylvania analyst meeting, Richer ? one of a handful of 40-something executives serving as Wandell's lieutenants ? followed the CEO's presentation by showing a slide that indicates the company's average buyers are still too old.

It showed a bell curve related to the current age of the company's buyer base, with the peak of the curve sitting squarely at about age 55. "It's not a war between this end and that end ... but our job is to broaden the customer base," he said.

One of Richer's key moves was to shatter the misconception that Hogs were expensive so-called Geezer Glides, or large touring bikes more for comfort and road trips than for sex appeal and drag strips.

"A lot of young adults would tell us, "hey I like Harley, but Harley's are like $20,000 (and) I don't have that kind of coin right now," said Richer, who joined Harley from General Motors in 2008.

To do this, Richer launched an ad campaign marketing a bare-bones retro bike called the Iron 883 for the price of $8,000, the equivalent of $6 per day with certain financing packages. In one ad, equating the bike's operating cost to "about six bucks a day," the company said the 883's daily cost was "cheaper than your smokes, a six-pack, a lap dance, a bar tab, another tattoo, a parking ticket, a gas station burrito, bail, cheap sunglasses (or) more black T-shirts."

Other changes forced designers and dealers to rethink the way they make and sell bikes.

The key example of this is the new Dark Custom trim line of bikes, such as the Street Bob that Adams, the student, spent his savings on. They reflect a more old-school and sporty design and carry a softer finish thanks to matte-black paint schemes.

"Among the young people, they just love the look of it. It's kind of that rockabilly, rock-and-roll, urban, cool cruiser look," said Kenn Hartmann, a salesman at Harley-Davidson in Berwyn, Illinois.

Richer, speaking to the analysts, showed a slide that indicates two of every three Dark Custom buyers are new to the brand ? which doubles the conquest rate of all other bikes the company sells.

Another tactic is getting dealers to help train aspiring bikers how to operate a powerful motorcycle through various learn-to-ride programs, such as Rider's Edge and Motorcycle Boot Camp.

Motor City Harley-Davidson in Farmington Hills, Michigan, is one of several dealers to jump head-first into the initiative. Marketing manager Jennifer Loberman said one-third of all participants in this program since 2007, or about 500 prospective buyers, were under the age of 35. A quarter of them bought a bike within 12 months.

Danny Solis, a 29-year-old living in Chicago, decided earlier this year that he finally had enough money to buy a motorcycle. In mid-summer, shortly after attending Rider's Edge at the Berwyn dealership, he bought a new Harley-Davidson.

"At first I really didn't want a Harley," he said, citing a competitor's bike he found more alluring. But after considering the cost of his first choice, and realizing used Harley's were typically as expensive as new ones, he bought an orange Forty-Eight for about $11,000.

Pricing has definitely been a key part of the equation, but the promise of a cheap bike isn't fueling the brand's entire drive toward a younger demographic.

In fact, the highest-selling model among young buyers is the $19,000 Street Glide, a touring bike that looks much like the meatier gliders that have become a preferred option among boomers. And, J.D. Power said that buyers between the ages of 30 and 40 year spent nearly $1,900 on gear, parts and service for motorcycles in 2010, or $300 more than they did in 2008.

But the bike with the most momentum is the Iron 883, which anchors the brand's Sportster family and is available in the Dark Custom trim package.

"Our bestseller is our cheapest bike," said Fredo, from the New York dealer. "I can't hardly keep them in stock."

Due to popularity in a variety of markets, the lower-priced Sportsters are growing twice as fast as Harley-Davidson's other motorcycle segments. But this comes at a time when margins are under pressure due to restructuring initiatives and other factors.

In 2008, right before Wandell arrived, Harley-Davidson's average operating profit on a new bike was about $3,184. Through the first nine months of 2011, that number has fallen by $30 per bike, though the decline is significantly greater (as much as $350 per bike) if measured at the retail rather than production end of the supply chain. This includes profit from parts and accessories, but not income from bike financing.

Richer signaled a willingness to take a short-term hit, if necessary, to win young buyers that Harley estimates have a 93 percent loyalty rate.

"There's no question a person buying a first Harley may not be as short term financially beneficial as a boomer. But the customer's value over a lifetime is pretty easy to get excited about."
